Great to see you asked her what she was performing at the Tony Awards.
Everyone on here has been on edge to what she's going to be performing -- is it something from THE COLOR PURPLE? Or...?

Ofcourse there won't be a Color Purple performance.
First, it's not nominated, that was last year.
And second, if Lovemusik and Legally Blonde weren't allowed, honestly do you think TCP would be allowed?
Common sense.

Didnt speak with her--- I had asked at the box office if she was going to be doing the show next Sunday, and they said "yes"--- she would have time to do "TCP", because she is the last performance on the Tony Awards.

No matter the "rules"
She should sing from the Show
her reviews alone deserve that.

First of all, I surely hope not. She's about as wrong as you can be for Dorothy.
Second of all, I doubt it. She's not going to commit to another theatrical project so soon after her run in "The Color Purple" as she's already said she's going back into the studio to work on another album and is making plans to tour once her Broadway engagement is done.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Doesn't mean she is going to be in The Wiz, she can still sing Home.
Similiar to how Mary J. sang What I Did For Love, Hugh & Aretha singing Somewhere, etc.

I thought the post just meant that she would be singing "Home" not that she would be playing Dorothy. I would be very surprised if Nikki M. James didn't open the revival on Broadway if it does indeed happens.

I'm still hoping for Anika Noni Rose in The Wiz.

I'm surprised she isn't getting the evening show off. That's cutting it very close for the Tony Awards. And if she does Home, she'll be singing a song she's never done in public before. While she could sing either I'm Here or Summertime in her sleep.
Interesting that Alice Walker was there. She was at the show less than two weeks ago.

Hope all you want, but it's not going to happen. She had the offer and passed.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."

First, Testing how many times have you seen TCP with Fantasia? It seems like about four, every week seems like you visit. That's nice.
Second, why would she be singing "home" from the wiz of all things at the Tony's? I could definitely see her in this role, that's for sure, if she can play Celie and knock it out of the park with Critically Acclaimed reviews, duh, she could play dorothy, anyone doubting her ability to play dorothy in the wiz is nuts, IMO. I could definitely see why they'd want her to play dorothy, afterall, she is a critically acclaimed award winning broadway actress who's a proven HUGE box office draw.
However, she isn't playing any dorothy and I doubt she'll be singing "home" at the tony's. UNLESS, she is considering that role. Anyway, I doubt that.

Can someone explain to me WHY she's even performing at all? The show was nominated LAST year.
If it's just because she's a 'name' then why don't they let Joey Lawrence perform as well? Melanie Griffith (well, she stank, but...)? Or any of the other stunt casting that other shows have doen?
Sounds like a huge waste of time for very little in return.

While I love her in "TCP", I dont really understand why she is performing either--- the obvious answer being ratings, of course.

Well, the ratings thing could back fire big time. She may be known in the mid-west and things, but none of those folks read any of her positive reviews as they most likely don't read The New York Times or such papers, but they DO read Entertainment Weekly, who was rather harsh in their review, saying, ..."she's cold and robotic, and never becomes the sprawling show's much needed emotional touchstone"... ouch.
So, again, WHY is she performing? It just seems odd.

I agree with you Diva. However, it's for rating. I think they're trying to get the highest rating they can going against The Sopranos.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
