re: Fastasia's Last Day/ Tony Performance

Yup,

Wicked signed off.

We must all keep an eye out for this loser and let everyone know they are a fake.

Lunatics Unite on a Sunday Night

All the nutso's just can't stay away. Too funny. I'm grabbing a snack too, this is too funny to miss. I actually can't believe they are still at this. But, considering those at it, I'm not surprised.

It's a lunatic convention up in here.

hehe, maybe I should go back and actually read what this thread is about and what led to the sudden spontaneous combustion of a few posters.

re: Fastasia's Last Day/ Tony Performance

I just got back home to the UK after flying out for 5 days to see Fantasia in the Color purple . Let me qualify this by saying i'm not a Broadway fan and have no real experience of the theatre world . I am however a huge fan of Fantasia's . I went to see her in the Color purple as it was unlikely to see her in concert over here for a while . I had read the reviews and was very happy that they seemed positive . None of this however prepared me for the experience I had last saturday night . The whole cast was incredible , but Fantasia was just phenomenal ! It wasn't perfect at times I struggled to make out some of the dialogue because her speaking voice appeared a little hoarse and the southern accent was sometimes a little tricky to follow . However her acting knocked my socks off .She was entirely believable and delivered a genuinely moving and powerful performance and this was even before she got to the singing . All in all I can honestly say that if this is what Broadway is all about then I've been missing out all these years . Thank you Fantasia and the cast of The Color purple

<< However her acting knocked my socks off >>

Totally agree---- she has really taken the role to a new level.

I still worry about her voice over the long haul. But, for now, truly not to be missed.

re: Fastasia's Last Day/ Tony Performance

I've been worried about Fantasia's voice since the AI days. She probably isn't singing properly (technique.) And singing like that 8x can't be good.

But her voice is sounding better these days.

re: Fastasia's Last Day/ Tony Performance

Agree, ljay.... I have noticed that she (probably at director's request) has been "speaking" her "I'm Here" more, rather than belting it out.

She has slowed it down, but it works for her. It's more powerful now, in terms of its meaning. Hey, if it made Clive Barnes cry.....

re: Fastasia's Last Day/ Tony Performance

1) I am not a complainer
2) I have nothing against Fantasia or The Color Purple (I liked it). I realize that she has brought people to Broadway in droves and I am sure that her performance is good (Have not seen her).

But, it is just so wrong to have Fantasia performing "I'm Here" at the Tonys this year.
This should be a celebration of the 2006-2007 season, not the 2005-2006 season.

What's next to boost the Tony ratings?
Jennifer Holiday and Jennifer Hudson both performing AIMTY then the viewing audience calls in and decides which is the better version?

re: Fastasia's Last Day/ Tony Performance

Steve2- thats not a good analogy. Jennifer Hudson and Jennifer Holliday are not in a current broadway show. Fantasia is starring in and winning awards in a current show.

Its been said so many times its not fair - but it is what it is.

Also, Im not sure I understand some of the comments referring to the Fantasia of AI versus now. She is the same singer and although she does sing differently at times- its the same voice we heard from AI. I wouldnt worry about her voice either she has been singing much harder songs since she has been 5 years old - her voice just has that raspy sound to it - she is doing nothing wrong.

Also, I heard Barbara Cook introduced Fantasia for the Theatre award and was gushing about her voice and was blown away by her acting in TCP. Very nice.

Testing- have you heard that she may do Summertime? I know whatever song is chosen she will have everybody out of their seats - which is the norm for her and live performances.

Only a few more days now - I cant wait to hear it - and to see the other performers on the show.

re: Fastasia's Last Day/ Tony Performance

That was just a rumor that I heard at the theatre the other night- not sure if its true (re: "Summertime")

I had heard that she would not be doing a song from "TCP", but not sure how true that is.

Whatever she sings, I will be happy !

"What's next to boost the Tony ratings?

Now, if they really wanted ratings this is what they would have done. A Holliday/Hudson battle of "Am I'm telling you" live on the tony stage? Oh yeah, that would have been a ratings smash. Or, Even legally blonde.

Fantasia, however, isn't performing for ratings. She's performing because she's earned critical acclaimed rave reviews, of which her performance of "I'm here" on Broadway is said to match the intensity of Holliday all those years ago. She is not a Beyonce.

Who knows, perhaps if Fantasia never hit the broadway stage to rave reviews, we might have seen Blonde or Holliday/Hudson doing "And I'm telling you", however, they decided to make room to toast the current smash of broadway. Actually, they should because Fantasia can't win a Tony for this and looking at the reviews she would have had a shot at one if she were eligible. I guess it's their way of saying "thanks" to her for a wonderful performance.

"Fantasia, however, isn't performing for ratings. She's performing because she's earned critical acclaimed rave reviews"

You've got to be kidding. Donna Murphy and Michael Cerveris got raves too. They're not performing.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

"You've got to be kidding. Donna Murphy and Michael Cerveris got raves too. They're not performing. "

Exactly, and they are being toasted by being nominated for Actual Tony awards. Do you think Donna Murphy and Michael Cerveris would like to trade places with Fantasia and perform instead of being nominated and possibly winning? You can't have it all folks. I'm sure had Fantasia been "nominated" she wouldn't be performing either, unless, her show was nominated.

re: Fastasia's Last Day/ Tony Performance

alright, um, i dont wanna get involved in this whole virgo and wicked4life vs. everyone else fight, but i just want to say i hope Fantasia doesn't perform "I'm Here" on the Tonys for the sole reason thats been the only song shes performed on live television lately. Regis and Kelly, Oprah, American Idol...
The song and her singing it is really great, but I'd just like to hear something different. And I don't think anyone watching the Tonys this year wouldnt have heard her sing it on the other TV shows yet either, haha. but even if she does sing "I'm Here", I'm fine with that id just prefer something else. :)
