I'm so glad you're giving Bring Back Birdie another chance Bobby. "I Like What I Do," "A Man Worth Fightin' For," and "Well I'm Not" are fantastic songs.
Oh, West Side Story easily. Bernstein is my favorite composer, and Chita does a great job w/ "America" and particularly "A Boy Like That." And Larry Kert is in top form, his "Maria" gives me chills. I can't listen to the soundtrack, I adore the OBCR.
"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli
Overall my favorite would have to be the Rink. But her best tracks are:
Spanish Rose (Birdie) Where you are (Spiderwoman) and of course America from West Side. Don't oh Ma Me (the rink) Chief Cook and Bottle Washer) (rink) I Cant do it alone (All that Jazz)
I saw her show in San Diego on Saturday night. I was amazed and in awe at her performance. Not many performers, regardless of age, could be on stage the ENTIRE show, singing, dancing, and telling a life story like Chita did. I'm going back again. It's a must-see, even for people who aren't familiar with her work, as its a class in the history of american dance and musical theater. Simply terrifically amazing.
And my favorite recording, hmm..Kiss of the Spiderwoman. Though I do like that one track in Bring Back Birdie, "Well I'm Not" (or something to that effect, I can't remember the exact title).
I'd say her top-notch performances are in Kiss of the Spider Woman and Chicago both because of the quality of the material and because of the dramatic impact she creates. But I also love listening to her singing "English Teacher," "What Did I Ever See In Him?" and "Spanish Rose" honestly I only listen to her songs in the Bye Bye Birde OBCR.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
Her best recording is on "The Rink". She brought that score to life with Minnelli by her side. It's easier on the ears than the actual show was as well, having to watch them go for each others throats in that idiom was a lot to handle no matter how many times one saw the show.
"It is bad enough that people are dying of AIDS, but no one should die of ignorance." -
Elizabeth Taylor
"Bajour" because my mom who is a Chita addict dragged me to see it when I was in the first grade. She was wonderful in the show. Even as a child I remember her being fiery and VERY sexual.
