I know there are always a ton of bashers, but I thought this year's Tonys show was pretty good. Many high points listed above.
For me...
1) Drowsey Chaperone number. Boy, I want to see that show. Wished I'd have made the 100 mile drive last year.
2) Christine Ebersole's line was terrific (so was John T playing the "straight" man).
3) Threepenny Opera number. Not everyone's cup of hemlock, but that looked very interesting to me.
4) Clip of Patti LuPone as Evita. Brought back fond memories. It would be great to see that production again. (Although, I liked Mandy a bit better.)
Cheers to the group...

I didn't like the Jersey Boys performance either. It was too Vegas variety show for my liking.
I guess when it comes to Patti Lupone, you either love her or hate her, huh?

^^ Well 2 bad for you, because I loved their performance. What did you expect anyways, something that wasn't based on The Four Seasons, a real music group that sung rock and pop songs?
Anyways, my favorite moments were:
Jersey Boys winning best musical
Christian and John giving their speaches
The Wedding Singer performance
Seeing Norbert*squeel*!
Short flashback of the Pippin performance
Dreamgirls Trailer.

Posted: 6/13/06 at 6:34amThe look of sheer shock and then enjoyment on Christian Hoff's face. If he didn't embody what a winner should be like (surprised, gracious, excited as hell to be up on that stage) then I don't know who does!!

The Drowsy Chaperone performance was great!
Also, at the beginning when Harry Connick Jr. was singine the opening song Patti was the only one dancing.
#42re: Favorite Moment from Tonys
Posted: 6/13/06 at 8:25amThe Threepenny Opera, or Thripenee as Dale says :) , was an interesting performance that really stuck out. My other favorites were Sweeney Todd, which can never fail, and The Drowsy Chaperone.

I enjoyed the Drowsy Chaperone, Sweeney Todd, and Threepenny Opera performances.
I was also thoroughly amused at Patti's dancing. :)

The numbers from Drowsy, Wedding Singer and Jersey Boys all came off well, I thought.
The Color Purple has terrible music, very forgettable... but the performers put their hearts and souls into it, and I enjoyed watching that. LaChanze truly shines, which is no news to me. She's a terrific performer.
Sutton's "Show Off" number was great, but no where NEAR as good as I remember it being in the theatre. It felt a little "flat" and low-energy on TV, but still was the highlight of the telecast, as far as musical numbers.
I've heard nothing but bad things about The Wedding Singer, but this number was very appealing on TV, and it was a decent, catchy song, put over well by the cast.
Jersey Boys looks VERY slick, and the performance had a lot of energy. I can tell, even from this, that the show is very exciting on stage. Young sounded a little thin on his solo, but he seems so perfect for the part... then when they all came out and were joined by (what sounded like) ten off-stage singers, they completely lost me. I don't care if they are canned or live, it was WAY to prefabricated for me. I'd rather just play a Four Seasons record, in that case.
The Sweeney medley was very compelling. I still think the director's gimmick is stealing WAY too much attention from the material, but it works (to a point) on its own level. I was most impressed with Cerveris's acting. Very disturbing, like he could barely hold onto his sanity. Nicely done. Patti was playing Patti, with a failed attempt at a "geographically vague" accent. Still Patti plays Patti better than anyone I know. And the arrangements sounded too weird for me. The only thing missing was a kazoo and a washboard to make this the Country Bear Jamboree presents Sweeney Todd.

Well...I loved the whole thing but (and these aren`t from performances) When John Tartaglia came out with Rod and said "Oh PLEASE there`s nothing I`ve ever wanted more!....except Alan Cumming" LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When Sara Remeriz came out w/ T.R. Night and T.R. Night said in a weird way "Hey Sarah!.....you have a tony.....that`s cool." Ha ha
The performance from The Wedding Singer was my fav out of all of them! I saw it w/ the OBC and it was FANTASTIC! I don`t know why it`s getting so many bad reviews.....I guess people are getting tired of the "Movie into Musical" thing. I mean think about it!

I'm not getting tired of the movie-to-musical trend at all, it's just that The Wedding Singer is a pretty bad musical. The cuteness of the performers and how nice they may be at the stage door has nothing at all to do with the material they're performing

Enjoyed all the performances despite really bad camera work/choices during most of the song.
My favorite moment was Joanna Gleason questioning the teleprompter when she was talking about Sweeney...
"the half-mad barber" *double take, peers at the prompter incredulously* "HALF MAD?"
