#25Favorite Moments/Highlights of the 2015-2016 Season
Posted: 5/30/16 at 12:59pm

In purely visceral terms my favorite moments include:

The Garret Room floating above the river in THERESE RAQUIN, maybe the most gorgeous visual of the season.

A close second was the sequence in AMERICAN PSYCHO when the happy clouds of the semicircular Hamptons set are transformed door slam by door slam into the blood-splashed tomb of Patrick's rampage.

THE COLOR PURPLE was so full of visceral moments of glorious song, maybe the most glorious that was not in a song was Danielle Brooks' Sophia coming back to life at the Thanksgiving dinner. Electric.

The Act I Finale of SHUFFLE ALONG. Adrenaline, movement, performance, design and music to produce ecstasy. Pure and simple.

And a sentimental favorite: returning to AN AMERICAN IN PARIS just to watch those magical transformations of Paris from wartime to peacetime told in choreography, scenery, costumes, lighting and projections in one seamless whole.

Sitting on stage for A View From the Bridge, totally immersive from start to finish.

Out of town, Gregory Jon Phelps as Bottom in the American Shakespeare Center's A Midsummer Night's Dream. His death scene as Pyramis is perhaps the funniest comic rendering of anything I've ever seen.

*Savion Glover's glorious choreography in Shuffle Along

*Laura Benanti singing "Will He Like Me?" and Creel/Krakowski's "Ilona"

*Hamilton, after his son has died; the shared moment with his wife

*American Psycho….it started when I walked into the Schoenfeld and was surrounded by the eeriness of the music…..and the amazing experience didn't end until the bows.

*Carmen Cusack, and the wonderful sounds of bluegrass which brought the story to life.

-Randy Skinner's killer choreographry in Dames At Sea with a top notch cast executing it perfectly.

-Jennifer Simard in Disaster. Blessed be she.

So much to love!  Here are some of the standouts:

* Leslie Odom Jr.'s standout performance in Hamilton which is even more incredible considering how great everyone in that show is

* Mara Davi and Danny Gardner's train number in Dames at Sea

* The addition of ASL to Spring Awakening

* Ben Walker and the entire production of American Psycho

* The goofy antics of Robber Bridegroom

* Gavin Creel and Jane Krakowski's "Ilona"

* Seeing Stevie Nicks perform with the School of Rock kids

* The heartbreaking Gideon Glick in Significant Other

* It opened last season, but I didn't see it until this season - Judy Kuhn's heartbreaking "Days and Days"

* The Pennsylvania Graveyard Shuffle - Shuffle Along

* The final moments of Significant Other.

* The Gin Game (The slow dance made my heart stop)

* Cynthia Erivo. Period.

* Seeing Audra tap dance.

* The Humans

* Bright Star and hearing "So Familiar" live onstage.

* The set and visuals in American Psycho

* Hearing Jennifer Hudson sing live.

* Even with the over saturation of the show, going to the live lotteries for Hamilton and seeing some cool performances outside the theater.

* Murcury Fur

* Seeing my friend in "One Love" off off Broadway

* Finally seeing "The Flick"

I have a lot.

I had already seen Hamilton at the public so that was last season, but taking others to see it for the first time were among my favorite moments. (And Wait for It is my favorite moment every time.)

Bright Star, especially At Last, and Way Back in the Day.

Waving through a Window from Dear Evan Hansen

The scene in the dark with the lighting on the fingers during Spring Awakening (I still don't remember which song that was since I'm not very familiar with the score.)

Cynthia Erivo and Danielle Brooks in the Color Purple--especially I'm Here and Hell No.

Selling Out from American Psycho (I so wish this were around just 4 more days and I could see it again. Can we get an OBCR?)

Where's My Shoe in She Loves Me. I love this because it just shows how spunky and feisty Amalia is, and it's that moment when he knows and we know what she doesn't.

The end of Eclipsed when the Girl is faced with that choice. It wrecked me.

The end of the Father when I realized exactly what was going on. (I mean I understood the premise and knew he had dementia, but all the choices clicked for me at the end when we understand why they've had different people playing the roles.)

Megan Hilty in Noises Off.

Michelle Williams's monologue in Blackbird

Smiling all the way through Robber Bridegroom

The Light in the Piazzaconcert

1776 at encores--especially Momma Look Sharp

Overall, all the crying. I did a LOT of it.

-Cynthia Erivo singing I'm Here

-All of She Loves Me

-The staging of Helpless/Satisfied

-Phillipa Soo during Stay alive (reprise) and the finale. Brilliant acting and direction.

I hate to point out four moments in one single show, but the Spring Awakening revival was so brilliantly directed that I will always remember these three moments:

-Moritz's suicide. The way Daniel N. Durant tried to call back Ilse, how Alex Boniello gave Daniel the gun, started saying his lines and then left the stage. Haunting.

-Sandra Mae Frank saying 'Why didn't you tell me everything?'. I had goosebumps.

-'The dark I know so well'. The words 'There's a part I CAN'T tell' had a new meaning and it was even more heartbreaking.

American Psycho, everything about it, cast, set, lighting, music, everything was just amazing.

-on the topic of American Psycho, the phenomenal performances by Helene Yorke, Morgan Weed and Theo Stockman (really hope to these 3 back on broadway soon) and of course Alice Ripley!

The revival of Spring Awakening

Jayne Houdyshell in The Humans as well as the rest of the cast but i especially loved her

Rachel Bay Jones, and Ben Platt in Dear Evan Hansen, also the book and music!

Wasn't abe to see Hamilton, but....

- Every second of American Psycho. I had chills from the second the lights went down all the way until "This Is Not an Exit". Particularly "Selling Out", "In The Air Tonight", and "Hip To Be Square". Benjamin Walker, Helene Yorke, and Morgan Weed were standouts, but the whole cast was working their (very fit) asses off. I saw it twice and would see it again everyday if I could. I haven't been this devastated about a show closing so soon.

- "Bad Idea" from Waitress. Basically any scenes with Mueller and Gehling.

- Alex Brightman and the kids in School of Rock who are giving every single ounce of energy they have on the stage every night (at least both times I saw it). I left the show on absolute cloud nine and was smiling the whole night through. THOSE KIDS!!!! "You're in the Band" and "Stick It to the Man" are so great.

- The whole cast of She Loves Me and the whole night overall.

It's so good to see so much love for American Psycho, such a shame it's closing, people don't know what they are missing.

1. This is Not an Exit- American Psycho. Benjamin Walker's performance was thrilling! If you can, RUN to the Schoenfeld to see this before it closes Sunday. This show made me cry.. who would've thought. I sympathized for a psycho, it's a must see.

2. Vanilla Ice Cream- She Loves Me. Laura Benanti's performance is stunning!

3. ILONA- SHE LOVES ME. 2 words, GAVIN CREEL. His voice is effortless and soooo smooth and beautiful. Of course, Jane Krakowski's split is awesome as well! I will be replaying this over and over when the cast album comes out.

4. And of course, how could I ever talk about the highlights of the season if I didn't mention Cynthia Erivo.

Finally saw The Color Purple last night, and have to add Cynthia Erivo's entire performance, especially I'm Here. When she sings that high note on "Gonna SING out" it's breathtaking. What a stellar, stellar performance.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
