Phantom, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Wicked, Les Miserables and Jesus Christ Superstar... They are all so energetic!
What?? Musical theatre existed before 2002?? Get OUT!!!
Not only is DRS my favorite overture, it is about the only one I don't skip. Am I a bad person?

"On The 20th Century" - they played it again the other night on XM and it was fabulous
I second WhoCouldBeBlue's picks -- and add Gypsy.
Of the lesser known ones, some of mine are:
Bajour
Golden Rainbow
Minnies Boys
Baker Street
I Had A Ball
Jimmy
My favorite from a show, is MAME. From a film, it's FLOWER DRUM SONG.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is definatly the best.
I do like the Titanic one. It has different moods in it, I guess.
So... what, we close this thread out agreeing that "Gypsy" is the best overture?
LES MIZ
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS
LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA
WICKED
I guess even though short CHICAGO and THE PRODUCERS count Therefore they are on my list, too.
When I was in 6th grade I became obsessed with the 42nd Street overture. In fact I started a campaign - inside my head - for a new Tony Award category: Best Overture. We had a rockin' campaign, but unfortunately lost out in the finals. Still, great times, and a kick-ass overture.
Another overture that I feel, from beginning to end, tells the story and conveys every emotion of the show's upcoming events is that of Titanic. That overture still gives me the chills just listening to it on the OBCR. Gorgeous score.
*A note about overtures: It seems like up until a certain point in musical theater history, overtures were a staple to every new score. And then somewhere along the way shows came out that didn't include an overture. Nowadays it's not surprising for a show to start with no overture at all.
**Also, a pet peeve of mine is when audience members talk during the overture. Grr.

The Light in the Piazza - I fell in love with it right away
Miss Saigon - I absolutely adore the instruments in it
Candide - As my friend put it... it makes you very happy
West Side Story - Also needs no explanation, I think
Jesus Christ Superstar - Who doesn't rock out to this one?
The Scarlet Pimpernel - Also makes me happy
Carousel - Just lovely

Wait... does Overture have to be a separate song? (i.e. Gypsy's overture is separate, while that introduction to Les Mis isn't separate)
I'm really lost on what counts as an overture and what doesn't... And the differences between a prelude and an overture.
-The Phantom of the Opera (what a pointless sce-AAAHH CHANDELIER!!)
-Candide (simply beautiful)
-Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (just some damn cool music)
-West Side Story (from the film...excellent)
-The Drowsy Chaperone (gotta love the LP fading into the pit orchestra)
Forgot to mention the prologue to Martin Guerre with the theme slowly building as it's passed around the orchestra, before the full orchestra crescendo... Jonathan Tunick is a god.
Just putting it out there, I hate the DRS overture. I think it's lame.
But the ones I LOVE are:
-Titanic
-Dance of the Vampires
-Follies
-Merrily We Roll Along
-Baby
-The Light in the Piazza
-Grind
-The Witches of Eastwick
And while it is by no means great the Carrie overture holds a special place in my heart :)
Cats
Jesus Christ Superstar
Phantom of the Opera
(Leave Webber alone! He writes good overtures)
South Pacific
Bye Bye Birdie
Man of La Mancha
Me and My Girl
La Cage Aux Folles
Camelot
Wonderful Town
