An overture is an instrumental intro to a musical or opera.
In the case of musical theater, the overture was generally composed by the orchestrator, who took 4-5 of the songs (the ones that were most likely to have a shelf-life after the show closes) and combined them to make an orchestral suite.

1. Candide
2. Gypsy
3. Mack and Mabel
4. A Chorus Line
I had a the privilege of seeing Marvin Hamlisch conduct the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and they played the Overture from Chorus Line, which was cut before the show opened. It's really lovely.
