Favorite gay showtunes?

Oh, like all showtunes aren't gay. I'm talking about showtunes performed by gay characters or from gay-themed shows. What are your favorites? Mine are "Unlikely Lovers" from Falsettos and "You Walk With Me" from Full Monty.

In honor of us getting the 2006 Gay Games here in Chicago and in response to our current administration, I've put several hours of gay showtunes (gay characters or performers, gay shows, or simply from Dreamgirls!) up on my personal internet station. Feel free to check it out...

re: Favorite gay showtunes?

I love "What More Can I Say?" From Falsettos...beautiful piece of writing.
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

It's such a classic now that it's cliche, but you gotta love "I Am What I Am" from La Cage.
"Do you know ChrisLovesShows?" "Yes. Why, yes he does!"

How could I have forgotten I Am What I Am?? It's pretty much an anthem!

"Fantasies Come True" is so awesome! And yes the lesbian song from RENT "Take me or Leave Me". I'm a RENThead and I forgot about it! But, that too is beautiful.

"What More Can I Say?" From Falsettos ... Oh man.. it brings me back very fond memories.

It wasn't written with that intention, or maybe it was, but I think about this song from a gay point of view and I love it...

I am talking about "Our kind of love" from The Beautiful Game

"Our Kind Of Love" is the stand out song from that show. There are a few others, but that one was worth the price of the CD alone. But, I guess you have to be an ALW fan....

Jarico - I know why both of those songs are special to you. Especially What More Can I Say. It is also one of my favorites as you know very well. I think Our Kind of Love is especially appropriate for the issue of gay marriage right now.

I also like Robert Mitchum from Naked Boys Singing. I wonderful tribute to those who aren't caught up in the obsessive gym fad.

Mister Matt - I think that you are right !!

From "Our kind of love"

"I AM IN LOVE.
NO ONE CAN BLAME ME.
SUCH IS MY STORY,
AND MY FATE.

MY KIND OF LOVE
WILL NEVER SHAME ME.
MY LOVE IS STRONGER
THAN THEIR HATE.
MY LOVE IS STRONGER
THAN THEIR HATE

...

PEOPLE MUST LOVE,
NOW AND FOREVER.
THERE'S ONLY ONE LOVE IN THE END.
THERE'S ONLY ONE LOVE IN THE END."

"Will He Like Me? from She Loves Me

Who Will Love Me As I Am? from Side Show "

i'm sorry, maybe im confused, but how do either of these songs qualify as a gay showtune? I'm pretty sure Who Will Love Me is sung by two sisters, not a gay couple...and it's been a while since i;'ve seen She Loves Me but I don't remember a gay couple in that show either? Please tell me i'm not losing it!!

To be totally cliche, I have to back up I'll Cover You and Take Me or Leave Me from RENT =)

re: Favorite gay showtunes

Some of the other ones I put up on my station:

A Man of No Importance - Love Who You Love
A New Brain - Invitation to Sleep in My Arms
Dame Edna Everage - Friends Of Kenny
The Boy From Oz - I Honestly Love You
Plus stuff from Taboo, Elegies-A Song Cycle, Whoop-Dee-Doo, Ballad of Little Mikey, Rocky Horror Show, When Pigs Fly and many other shows with gay themes.

Even some with veiled gay themes like "AC/DC" from Starlight Express.

Also, songs by our favorite, brave, out performers, like Nathan, Lea, Harvey, Malcolm, Rosie, B.D., Christopher Sieber, John Barrowman, Michael Jeter, and Boy George.

Others to add??

re: re: Favorite gay showtunes

I know they have been listed already but I adore "What More Can I Say" and "Unlikely Lovers" from Falsettoland.

My other favorite is "What Would I Do" also from Falsettoland. This song is very special to me. One of my very favorites of all time.
