Splash is entirely too twinky for me. i think the best drinks in NY are from Monster (personally) and Ty's serves the cheapest drinks.
The Monster is my main "hang out" bar, but there's not much of a "club" scene to it.
Two words: happy hour. It's the best time for the bars -- not too crowded, but still busy, and dirt cheap. In Manhattan terms, at least.
And I rather like Xes, Barracuda and The Ritz. If we're talking bars.
And what's wrong with maps? (if you know how to read them, that is) Here's a hint about asking people for directions. Sometimes they don't know and don't want to sound stupid, so they'll just make something up. Self-reliance is always the best thing.

I have never been to SPLASH bar at all and probably would never go ..I can't stand dark clubs with loud music.
Funny bec. some of my good friends here in Boston used to bar tend at BUZZ and they can never make me go to BUZZ . My two sisters who live in NYC love to go to gay bars in Chelsea but they cant make go with them neither .. I like the atmosphere of a piano bar better than the dance club . Is there a smoking ban at the bars in NYC too ?
Moving forward...
The Cloisters is a good museum to go to in NYC - I would recommend it .

There's a smoking ban EVERYWHERE in NYC.
eta: indoors, that is, of course. they haven't regulated the street -- yet.

As for bars, Splash is club-like and loud...except Musical Mondays! They show videos of showtunes until around 11:30 when they have a performance. The upstairs then turns back into a club, but downstairs they show showtunes all night. I also like going across the street and east a bit from Splash...Karaoke 17. You can rent your own karaoke room for $6 per person, per hour...plus drinks. As for piano bars...Don't Tell Mama's is on Restaraunt Row and it's good but can geat really crowded. I would definately suggest Marie's Crisis!! Everyone just sits around a piano and sings showtunes to the top of their lungs....it's great! It's across from the Duplex on Grove St. Rose's Turn used to be next door, but it closed.

"Get out of Times Square and see the city... if you really want to get a taste of NYC, head out to Park Slope in Brooklyn... spend some time on 5th Avenue then walk towards Prospect Park and check out the beautiful old Brownstones."
Yes! I just did this last Friday when I was in the City. We actually took a water taxi from the South Street Seaport ($5 one way)over to Fulton Ferry Landing and ate at Grimaldi's Pizzeria...hands down best pizza I've ever had in NY! Then we went over to Park Slope/Prospect Park. The water taxi also gave me some awesome views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the skyline! Great day!
Lower East Side Tenement Museum - completely fascinating; not only seeing the spaces, but listening to the knowledgeable guides
Upright Citizens Brigade theater in Chelsea - if you time it right, you can get downtown to see one of their late shows after your Broadway show; kickass comedy for $5; even the free student nights are a lot of fun
Century 21 in the Financial District- designer clothes for cheap; if you're into that sort of thing

I must be the only person who cannot stand Washington Square Park. I lived across the street from the park for a year and walked through it as little as possible. It's always seemed so filthy, and the sellers (and undercover cops, hah) offering you dirt weed on a daily basis gets so old.
My favorite thing to do in NYC is to eat the amazing food the city has to offer. I also like to walk around different neighborhoods and just absorb the feel of them. I rarely go to the Met since having moved here, but walking through that museum is such a relaxing experience. Walk through the sculpture garden.
I also have to say that going to Century 21 is probably my LEAST favorite thing to do in NYC. It's so crowded that you can't actually browse the selection, and even if you could, everything is so disorganized that finding anything that is both in your size and appealing is almost impossible. Well, that was my experience, anyway. The home department isn't awful, though.

Hi,
Well, as a member of NYC and Co for the last 5 years and as a NYC reporter on NYC Broadway and culture here goes.
I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT NYC. But my favorite things to do comprise many areas:
1. Broadway and Off Broadway shows- Especially my favorite show Forbidden Broadway.
2. Eating- NYC is the greatest place to eat. (And sushi is my favorite food.
3. Museums- The MET, The Museum of Television and Radio, The Whitney.
4. Cabaret- The METROPOLITAN ROOM, BIRDLAND,
The Regency.
I love taking a boat ride around NYC and drinking Pinot Noir watching the sun set.
I LOVE NYC.

The company is called NY Water Taxi(www.nywatertaxi.com). It doesn't list the $5 price online, but as far as I know, that is the standard one-way ticket price. You can take other hop-on/hop-off routes that are a little more expensive, but we just wanted to go to Brooklyn. It's a little yellow ticket booth right on the pier. You can't miss it. It goes pretty fast across the harbor, but I still got some great pics and it was MUCH faster than walking across the bridge.
Someone posted this, saying tourists would get "eye-rolls":
"don't read maps, if you need help, ask someone, I honestly get lost in my own city ALL the time lol, just ask for directions"
I find this untrue. I use a credit-card-sized subway map every time I go to the City. You can get them in most hotels and in the times square visitors center. I've even seen New Yorkers use them. Also, I found that if I was looking at my map, someone would inevitably ask me if they could help. I'm sure there ARE new yorkers who would roll their eyes, but I don't care. I've also never used a big super-sized fold-out map. That I would NOT do, but a good subway map is useful for anyone.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet but go to Strand Bookstore there's one in Union Square, and South Street Seaport. Also try an apple cinnamon pretzel from one of the vendors near central park. The Hot Nuts are a good treat too.

yummy food haha
I've lived there on my own twice.
By far my favorite thing to do is walk around Bryant Park and just sit and read a book/tan on the lawn when it's beautiful outside.
I also LOVE walking from the upper west side alllll the way down to lower manhattan on REALLY nice days with my ipod and flip flops on. I love getting lost in the city's beauty and endlessness.
My favorite things to do in the city are,
Of course dinner and a broadway show is at the top of our lists!!!!
During the summer, going to the South Street Seaport - they have some nice restaurants there, one good one is Sequoia for lunch. Also Birdland on West 44th st. is a great night time event.
I love to go to the street fairs, there are always great shopping! You can get a cashmere scarf for $5!
The Holiday season is the best time to be in the city. I love going to 5th ave and looking through the windows, Macys on 34th street, just walking around is worth it because it's so festive!
Little Italy for dinner is cozy and has the best food!

best and worst depending on what you're looking for. I mean I'm from New York and even though I'm not a tourist, I do love the holiday season but the crowds can be absolutly brutal.
however, there are so many amzing things to do during the season, like check out the shops at bryant park and go ice skating there (for free! Avoid rockerfeller center, its obscenely expensive and you get kicked off the ice after just an hour, and thats after waiting FOREVER just to get onto the ice.)
I'm glad you resurrected this, mealz. (I can't believe this hasn't been knocked over to the 0ff-topic board!)
I woke up this morning with New York on my mind. This is my favorite time to visit New York because I love to walk and there is no better place on earth for walking than NY city. I keep my camera in hand because I am fascinated by the architecture of the buildings - particularly the turn of the century buildings in the upper west side. The architectural detail can usually only be appreciated with binoculars or a camera with a zoom. That long walk from upper west side as far south as possible is perfect in my book too!
