I think not. It's not bad, but it's very slight.

Hmm. What do you mean by that?
I remember thinking Heather Laws was fantastic in the revival but none of it translated to the recording, IMO. Katie FInneran was perfection in the NY Phil concert.
Based on recordings, of course Beth Howland, but Veanne Cox is a close second.
1. Cox
2. Howland
3. Finneran
4. Kahn
5. Laws
6. Jane Pfisch (Laws' understudy in the Broadway revival)
I found Sophie Thompson embarrassing.

It's slow, a little vocally strained and airy, and I think she makes some obvious or easy -- maybe too on-the-nose -- choices.
Comparatively speaking. It's a strong field.
Though I do like her "Amen!" quite a lot.
BETH HOWLAND...and a very close hilarious second to MADALINE KAHN...
i firmly believe the original is almost always the best version...

I love Alice's best, too. After her, Katie Finneran's.
Sondheim himself has stated that he thinks the "greatest performance" of this song was by Veanne Cox.
