Where do the tempos drag? I just listened to this CD again yesterday and don't hear anything resembling a slow tempo.
- I understand they're probably the original tempos. But at times they're way too slow for me. And all of the Roses since have used faster tempos. Bernadette's were actually pretty close to the original though. Angela sang a lightening fast ROSE'S TURN in the theatre, but on the CD it's not that fast. Patti's are even a bit fast, but I think the faster EVERYTHING'S COMING UP ROSES is perfect for her, it fits her ferocious rage at the end.

Patti and then Bernadette! Saw both live and both were incredible!
The Lansbury recording is my favorite recording though. If I saw her live, I'm sure she would have been my favorite.

Did the people that saw Merman, think that her acting was good?
Yes, Merman was excellent in the dramatic and comedy scenes. As to the comment that Merman was really playing Rose as Merman, the creative team wrote Rose specifically for her. They knew Merman's strengths and weaknesses, and used both brillantly. Merman never really played an unpleasant character on stage until "Gypsy."

She made the role happen, she made people cry, she made history! I am sure a lot of other people who played the role made people cry but not like Miss Ethel did.

Never saw Merman or Lansbury, though I prefer Lansbury's recording.
Of those I've seen, best to worst:
LuPone
Daly
Russell
Midler
Peters
Buckley
There is a big divide between Daly and Russell, however. Daly was astounding and second only to LuPone. Noone else found the character, imo. It's not just that I didnt like anyone else's performance, but I didnt like their Roses. If ya dont like Rose, it's a tough ride. Daly and LuPone were the only one's who got that. I may not have wanted to be their kid, but I'd have loved hanging out with each of their Roses.
That said, I'm not sure Lansbury didnt trump them all...wish I had seen that performance!

So I finally saw Patti in the role a week or so ago.
Don't get me wrong, I thought she was great.
But, I have to be honest, I enjoyed Bernadette more.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.
