I am looking forward to comments from theatre goers who are fortunate enough to be in the audience for the first public previews of THE STORY OF MY LIFE and GUYS & DOLLS on Broadway and THIS BEAUTIFUL CITY off-Broadway. All three of these musicals begin on the same night of February 3rd so I hope to see comments from the first nighters for these shows. I expect a variety of opinions to be expressed about these shows and it's always interesting to see how different each person's perception is and what elements of these shows evoke positive reactions from the first public preview to the opening night final product. Hope many people post their opinions.

That was... weird.

And yeah, Guys and Dolls starts on the 4th.

I really want to see "This Beautiful City." It looks really interesting. Are The Civilians shows usually standard musicals, or is it a little more experimental?

Guys & Dolls was originally scheduled to begin previews on Feb. 3rd, along with The Story of My Life and the off-broadway musical, This Beautiful City. The first previews date for Guy & Dolls was CHANGED to Feb. 4th. For those fortunate people who will see the first previews of any of these shows, I look forward to your postings about what you thought of each of these shows. Enjoy!

Are you, by any chance, part of the Mafia?

I passed by the Guys and Dolls marquee today and it looks like construction is still going on there! They'd better hurry up, as the first preview is Wednesday evening (and yes, I have a ticket for that night).

In some instances on Broadway, I've seen them actually still painting set pieces as much as a few hours before the audience is admitted. Maybe this is the case with GUYS & DOLLS. These are tough times for every show be it a revival or new crop of musicals like The Story Of My Life and the off-Broadway, This Beautiful City. We are fortunate to see ANY show open during this economic depression. I just heard some music and some some short video clips from the pre-Broadway Goodspeed run of The Story of My Life. Beautiful background orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick and the sung parts sounded quite good. Can't wait for the original Broadway Cast album release for this show. Hope it gets released during the preview period so I can hear it before I see the live performance. Lots of media activity should happen with these three shows opening soon. This Beautiful City has great photo coverage on the Vineyard website. Hope all three shows succeed!

WHOA! settle down.. you never know if they will actually record one. it might be possible they do, but you never know. This might turn out to be another Glory Days lol
And in all honesty, I don't foresee it doing too well either, but thats just my opinion

I think Glory Days will eventually get a CD released. I am certain This Beautiful City and The Story of My Life will as well. Many shows have a delayed release but all three of these shows are likely to have an original cast recording made. The internet exposure of sound bites alone from each of these shows have generated enough demand that the composers will want to make sure they are recorded. There's a market for all three of these shows.

I saw This Beautiful City during its run in DC this summer and really enjoyed it. I wouldn't call the structure standard, but it isn't too too experimental. Because of how the project was conceived (interviews with real people), it's more... reimagined vignettes, I suppose, from their interviews. It's not too off-putting or strange, but just different enough to make it interesting.

I have a question... is Bryan (Theatre2) your daddy?

Really, though. Just. No.

WHY would GLORY DAYS get a cd? No one wanted to see it. And those that did said it was a hot mess.

This Beautiful City can't have an OBC. It's off b'way...but it could get a recording. Let's wait and see if ANYONE besides you is excited about this show.

>We are fortunate to see ANY show open during this economic depression.<

20 shows open between now and the end of the season, which is an incredibly busy spring. And the 2008-2009 season will end up having 41 shows total, which is more than have opened in any season in years.

Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

I saw it down in LA and I think you might enjoy it. It's especially well suited for The Vineyard Theatre. Last show I saw at the Vineyard was Mary Rose and they did a great job. I know This Beautiful City has been upgraded quite a bit. If you go to the Vineyard website, RentBoy, I think you will enjoy the photo layout for this show. This is the LA cast and same production but the photos (if taken at the Vineyard) looks like they have upgraded the lighting. I did enjoy the score. It's not for everyone but it moves fast and provided me an enjoyable night at the theatre.
