I understand that Molly's part isnt very big. I think it has like 4 lines (my sister was once that part.)I think everyone didnt like her in ITW was simply because the original was beyond brilliant. I do know many other talented actresses who could have played it better. For example, Anna Kendrick was up for Little Red in the revival but was beat out by Molly...?!

But doesn't the Shprtintze and Bielke track also include the roles of Grama Tzeitel and Fruma Sara???

Robbie, come again? Bielke, and Shprtintze don't have any solos.

As for Molly, I think a lot of people were being unneccesarily harsh on the girl. I for one really enjoyed her performance as Little Red, because it was an honest interpretation, and what I mean by that, is that she was an actual little girl doing, and behaving truly as a little girl, without any obnoxious intepretations and choices as an actress. Brilliant as Danielle Ferland was, she was QUITE obnoxious in interpretation, and Little Red does not HAVE to be an absolute brat. There were times watching Danielle as Little Red where I was thinking, that I wish I was the Baker, just so I could slap her in the mouth for being so fresh. Molly was bratty - but as most little kids are at that age - A lot of them tend to have a one track mind, and don't usually see the "bigger picture" therefore coming across as selfish. But it really comes down to being immature, and having yet to learn and grow and think as an adult. Furthermore, I liked Molly's interpretation too, because her dialogue and questions prior to the Giantess scene, after that scene, and during "No One Is Alone" seemed to be genuine, unforced, and honest, to the point where it was touching for me. Brilliant as Danielle was, I could never really believe that she was TOTALLY scared or afraid or remorseful about any of her actions. With Molly, I felt that. Just my 2 cents.

Cheers,
The Balladeer

In the last Broadway revival of FIDDLER, the woman who played Shprintze doubled as Grandma Tzeitel. The performer was Kathy St. George, a wonderful woman and actress who is a major player in the Boston theatre scene.

I just checked IBDB to see if this was ever done before...and apparently, it was done in the 1981 revival. Susan Shepperd doubled as Shprintze and Grandma Tzeitel. And in a bizarre twist, I've worked with her as well, although in the corporate world.

All this hub-bub about Molly---AT LEAST SHE'S JEWISH! The three girls playing the three older daughters couldn't wronger for these roles if they tried. What--THERE ARE NO JEWISH ACTRESSES IN THE MUSICAL THEATRE IN NEW YORK? ( I know that this is politically incorrect--but COME ON!) I keep thinking of all of those young ladies who keep getting told "you're too Jewish" for everything that they audition for...and then a revival of FIDDLER comes along and they give these roles to these three. Sorry--NOT FAIR!

I have no problem with an actress who isn't Jewish playing a daughter in FIDDLER. I do have a problem when the actresses look like they're slumming from the bus & truck of Darlin' Juno!! I mean COME ON!!! MAP OF IRELAND, PEOPLE!!!!

Laura Michelle Kelly is an incredibly hot contender for Mary Poppins, I'm gonna bet her contract is a 6 month one.. she's supposed to be in rehearsals for Mary Poppins in July if she gets it!

Amneris,

Why won't FIDDLER last till the summer? I don't understand. Alfred Molina, Randy Graff and Barbara Barrie (in the most important roles) are all inspired choices. It's a beautiful piece of theatre and there are a whole lotta Jews (and non-Jews, like myself) who want to see it.

there are plenty of people who will see it but, not enough... Fiddler NEVER lasted on bway and if families want to see fiddler, they would probably pay $12 to see a community theater production rather than pay $100 + for each seat... Plus do you think many kids let alone adults know who Alfred Molina is? If I didnt see the movie FRIDA i'd be clueless..I did FIddler about 5 years ago..one of the most professional and best things i have done...it holds a very special place in my heart...but, i just don't see it lasting. If shows like NINE with star power cant last...maybe im wrong and im sorry for jumping months a head of myself but only time will tell. I also think they are stupid for opening the show at the WORST part of the theater season... Jan,feb and march are usually dead for bway capacity. Updated On: 12/2/03 at 03:57 PM

When they ran their first ad they did $1 million in ticket sales. I don't think that's such a bad sign.

Do I taste bitter batter, Amneris?

I think time will tell how Fiddler will do. Sure everyone has seen it, but how many have seen a GOOD Fiddler. They are smart doing the big ads, AND putting out a $65 discount code... (no names here Rosie). I bet it will survive through the Tonys, and if it can steal the the Tony from Wonderful Town, it will most likely have a decent run.

FIDDLER's original production ran for nearly eight years. Once upon a time it lasted.

You may very well be right that it won't last...who can say? I'm just not so sure it's because FIDDLER is done in community theatre.

If it's a good production, I'd shell out $100 to see it, even though I've attended a community production. Personally, I think it might turn out well. If David works the same magic he did with Nine, we might have an excellent Fiddler.

I think Fiddler will have a successful run, it is an amazing piece of theatre. I am pleased with their casting choices, and hope that this production will mark a new start for the Minskoff Theatre......Who knows this could be the Minskoff's first success story in years! Anyways, I am looking forward to it, and cannot wait to see it!!!

Bye!

I wish only the best for this show, but I do think it will be hurt at the box office by lack of the stars’ name recognition, at least with the tourists- and then there’s always the curse of the Minskoff! I get the chills just walking by the place.

If Alfred Molina can pull off Tevye, then there’s hope… but people of a certain age (which is most of us who will see this show, I think!) have such strong memories of both Zero Mostel in the movie and Topol in the play that it will be hard to accept a new (and thinner!) Tevye.

The strongest point of this show, I think, is the music… if ‘Sunrise, Sunset’ and ‘Tradition’ can still send shivers down my spine, that’s the key. I do have to agree with Effie that casting non-Jews in most of the key roles is a bit of an affront, like casting Natalie Wood in the lead for the movie of ‘West Side Story’. Not meaning to 'kvetch', but there are some things you have to feel in your blood… But that’s just me- and since I have a very personal attachment to this show, as it’s completely the story of my grandparents’ lives, I might be a touch biased…

Anyway, I got my discount tickets a while ago, and look forward to seeing it in March!

no bitterness here... just confused with this years unexciting theater season...that is all...also confused again as to why they had to get an actress from the UK when there are hundreds of out of work actresses for the part. I just fear any show going into the Minskoff...that theater is cursed.

I can't believe some of the negativity I'm reading on this topic. The show hasn't even opened and people are saying it's closing. Do you have a crystal ball? I for one think "Fiddler" sounds very exciting. David Ayers (Sky understudy) from Mamma Mia! is in the cast. I know for certain that a lot of actors read these boards, especially the broadwayworld.com news because it does a very nice job in pulling together stories from various sites. Way to go Rob!! It's a shame some of the awful things that are posted. How would you feel if you were a cast member and read such things? Good luck to the cast of Fiddler!!!!!!!!!! If I were a rich man...

i hate to tell you but... it is a message board where things will be said...not always nice. Do you think actors will yell at critics if they say a show is bad? Fans can write what they want to... rob doesnt mind what we say as long as it's not harmful or harrassing someone else.

Well, if you want a reputation for saying things that are not nice without any backing than more power to you. Who do you think is "stupid" for opening Fiddler? The producers? I sure hope that one day you're not a producer and someone calls you stupid or an actor and someone says you're not talented. Fans can be so cruel. Sounds to me like you're not a fan of this production or the cast.

sounds to me like you're either a 12 year old or a shill. Im allowed an opinion... no one said anything about "reputations" you obviously have no idea what a message board is about. I know I will see the show and Im probably wrong for stuff i have said but if people arent allowed opinions then why bother posting at all?

I never said you weren't allowed an opinion. I basically said that it wasn't right to trash a show or the cast before the show even starts. It's one thing to have an opinion, it's another thing to be down right cruel. Why would you see a show you just bad-mouthed? That makes no sense.

Ok so then I wont give the show my business... i didnt TRASH the show nor bad mouth the cast... you are twisting this stupid thread around... PEOPLE just discussed how it's strange they couldnt find jewish actors or ny actors and had to get a girl from the UK...is that so harsh? I dont get you...but im going to end this because I dont wish to upset rob or upset you anymore.
