It's supposed to happen next fall, and Danny Burstein was in talks about it a few months ago.

It was announced last March that Bartlett Sher would be directing with Danny Burstein possibly starring as Tevye, planning to hit Broadway sometime next season.

Danny would make a great Tevye. But how will this revival be different than the 5 other ones? That's my problem with revivals. If you don't bring anything new to it, then why do it?

When you write us a new musical or find us a new one that can hold a candle to shows like Fiddler, then let's talk.
I get tired of revivals too, but there is just so little "new" stuff that can even begin to compare with some of the classics.

I'm not in any way against it coming back, but as you mentioned it is culturally significant ( and it is) but is it more culturally significant NOW than it was 10 years ago? It's a perfect show, but so is Guys and Dolls and they somehow managed to screw up that revival.

According to the article it will be staged more like the original show ( which I didn't see) so if the reviews are good I will probably go see it. I saw the tour with Topol a few years ago and was bored to tears.

Please keep in mind that the last revival from David Leveaux was criticized for lacking any real Jewish soul. Bartlett Sher on the other hand, I think is a perfect match!
Just imagine what all the production values would look like from Donald Holder's lighting, to Michael Yeargan's sets, to Catherine Zuber's costumes...

All this Fiddler talk has given me inspiration to research the original show and I had no idea Beatrice Arthur was the original Yente and Bette Midler was a replacement for Tzeitel.
EDIT: I'm also realizing that we have had a Broadway production of Fiddler every 10 years or so since the original Broadway production. Haha.

Shakin, Bette Midler was not the original Tzeitel. She was a replacement.
There's a wonderful documentary on the Fiddler movie Blu-Ray about the actresses who played Tevye's daughters, both on Broadway and in the movie. Lots of fun interviews and at some point it mentions that Bette was passed over for the movie role.

Posted: 10/2/14 at 10:36amAs much as I love Danny Burstein and think he would be terrific (although, having seen him in "Talley's Folly" I feel like I've already seen him do Tevye), Adam Heller's recent performance at Goodspeed was revelatory. Poignant, witty and devoid of any of the schtick one associates with the role. He wouldn't sell tickets, but then, the show sells itself, right? Of course, right!

It is never "too soon" for a FIDDLER revival.
A wonderfully written piece of work that will forever stand the test of time, it remains extremely relevant in society today as it did 50 years ago.
We only need to look at the alarming persecution and targeting of Jews in Paris, France, by radical Muslim sects to see how relevant the musical still is.

They felt the need to "reimagine" that including I believe changing the time period the show was set in. Classic works are classic for a reason, they don't need to be reimagined.

The only draw for me is Bart Sher directing, but we all know its basically gonna be the same show as the original except with different actors, and different technical elements. I would love for someone to seriously mess with this show like Diane Paulus-THEN we'd get a true revival!!
