If a remake is what they wanted to do, there are so many other movie musicals they could have done
A Chorus Line
Phantom of the Opera
Rent
The Producers
Hair
The Wiz
Man of La Mancha
A Little Night Music
Mame
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
WSS was not perfect but it was pretty damn good.

"Why wouldn't he be happy? He loved the Sweeney film (a film I *like* but c'mon--he still fawns over the changes made.) And I think he has said before that the WSS film doesn't work for him as well as it does on stage, but I could be wrong."
It's true. He has said that. He just was way nicer about it than Laurents would ever be even in death. He's just never been terribly fond of film adaptations of his shows….and after seeing clips of A Little Night Music, I'm not surprised.
I actually thought most of the changes worked fine for the Sweeney Todd movie.
But we're not talkin' about that, we're talkin' about this remake of West Side Story.

Oh God. Not another one of those musical to movie transfers! Oops...sorry. It's the other way around that's bad, right? What are the rules about what can be on stage and what can be on film again? I always forget.
Anyway, I hope this reboot is grittier with a fresh face and a new onesie.
I like my thing so I hope another thing isn't made because that means I can't like my thing anymore because mine will always be better than that new thing that will make my thing irrelevant and that would make me sad because my thing is so much better than the unknown new thing.
Spielberg's said for years that he wanted to make a movie musical. But what is the point of remaking a great movie musical that still holds up today? Chances are, this is going to either be derivative of the original or pale in comparison. Is anyone attached to Pippin yet? He should do that instead.
But, if it must be WSS, I want a Chit and Rita cameo. Perhaps they can be sisters who run a taquito stand that the Sharks hang out at.

Color me curious, I guess. The original film is a masterpiece and while I'd rather see a different, unfilmed musical get the big treatment there's no real harm in giving it another go. Spielberg's an incredibly talented director, so at least it's him and not Rob Marshall.

This sounds like George Chakiris and Grover Dale hanging out at Danielle Derrioux's french-fry shop in THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT. In fact, that would be the perfect film for an American re-boot. They could call it, say, THE CHICKS FROM CHATTANOOGA.

Why all the "What is the point?" rhetorical questions??? Most of you are adults who are at least tangentially acquainted with how pop culture works. If a name from the past, a TV show or older film, is still in public consciousness it will be remade as a new film. You know that, right? You might not like it but...but actually, I don't quite understand WHY you don't like it...
There are few more iconic musical films than "West Side Story". It is revered. I'm sure Spielberg reveres it as well. However, as much as we all love it, there are people who know the name, sorta think they know it, saw parts of it on an afternoon movie channel once. But have never seen it. But they probably have a more positive than not image in their heads.
They will NEVER rerelease the original "West Side Story" in theatres again. There are millions of young people who have never seen it. It will not destroy the previous film. It will coexist in the world with the new one. A new "West Side Story" can make money. It could be brilliant. It's Spielberg directing a movie musical! Really, what is your problem with this??? I honestly don't understand.
