"Oh...in the past week, My love for Wicked dropped so much...and I became in love with "Into the Woods" and "Sunday in the Park with George". Stephen Sondheim is brilliant!"
One of my students just IMed me this - direct quote. I am a VERY happy teacher right now.

As Jean Brodie said, "...[your student] is [yours] forever."

That's sad.
Sondheim may be brilliant.
But Wicked is ingenious.

i agree.
i hate it how some people think shows like Sunday In the Park With George is better than Wicked because the OBC has a guy with an unusually high voice in it.
it's just stupid.

What planet are you living on? I hope this is a joke.

Wicked is the new Sweeney.
And no one can stop that.
Let's put down our razors, pick up our brooms, and fly to the sky as we defy gravity!

Posted: 4/17/06 at 12:26amJudas, in what way do you feel Schwartz is "better" other than being more accessible?

Posted: 4/17/06 at 12:43amWhile I'll admit Sondheim can write some great lyrics, he can't whip up a great melody like Schwartz. Schwartz has a greater number of musicals that appeal to me, and I've never found it hard to get into his music as I did with Sondheim. Simply put, I like Schwartz's songs better.

Schwartz is just so generic, poppy, and ick.
I like music that grow on you, and is complex, and truly beautiful. Which is Sondheim.
Scwartz just reuses the same stuff over and over again.

Allow me to be the third to voice a concern over a student having the ability to IM a teacher.
While it may be an innocent act I have to wonder why you would provide the information to be IMed by any students.

Posted: 4/17/06 at 1:34amA little off topic, but I don't think IM-ing a teacher is something to be concerned about. I know a lot of teachers that give out their screen name or personal email address so that they can be reached if they ever have a question. Teachers/Coaches even give out their phone numbers.

Posted: 4/17/06 at 1:50amFair enough. Schwartz is more poppy and made to appeal instantly to the ear. Sondheim is often more appreciated with repitition and appreciation of the melody's suitability to the lyric.

Posted: 4/17/06 at 1:51amI also have teachers who supply their emails to students. Can't adults talk to kids anymore without getting into naughty territory?

hmm... interetsing. I love Sondheim... and I like some of Schwartz.
But when I saw wicked most of the songs were like fluff... there are some good songs... but the whole score isnt great.
I dont think Sondheim has written a filler song in his life.
