"Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre Stephen Sondheim"
Awesome. The musical stuff I could really not give a crap about. It's weird, but this is the first year I've seen in a while that the Tony nominations mimic the Academy Awards in that all the musicals are quite obscure, with the slight exception of Cry Baby (but, really?!)...shocked to see YF and TLM almost totally snubbed. Whatever, it's gonna be predictable, so they should just hand the Tony to In the Heights right now to get it over with. Even the plays offer a more interesting race.
Meh, I'll be here next year rooting for title of show...
I hate to break it to you, but the BEST NEW PLAY is very predicatable too for August : Osage County..
Actually everything is predictable!
Best New Musical- In the Heights Revival- South Pacific
Best New Play- August : Osage County Revival- Boeing, Boeing
I dont even wanna go to the acting category..we know who is going to win...Miss Patti, Laura Benanti, Dan Evans & Boyd Gaines... yeah- might as well hand them the TONYS now! lol!
Overall I'm happy with the nominations, but I wish that at least one August man was represented .... GO AUGUST, PASSING STRANGE, SOUTH PACIFIC, GYPSY and BOEING-BOEING!!!
This is indeed the year for musical revivals. I'm sorry to hear that CRY-BABY got the three big musical nominations over A CATERED AFFAIR, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, and THE LITTLE MERMAID.
Ah, well.
"I mean, sitting side by side with another man watching Patti LuPone play Rose in GYPSY on Broadway is essentially the equivalent of having hardcore sex." -Wanna Be A Foster.
"Say 'Goody.' Say 'Bubbi.'" ... "That's it. Exactly as if it were 'Goody.' Now I know you're gonna sing 'Goody' this time, but nevertheless..."
40+ years of watching the Tonys has taught me that NOTHING, NOTHING, is a sure thing. As far as I'm concerned, Patti should get the Tony hands down, but, unfortunately, my concern does not make any difference. Remember Mary Martin beating out Merman for the original Gypsy? EVERYONE was sure that Merman had it in the bag and then Miss Sweetsie goes and wins for a saccharine role in Sound of Music. Two Gentlemen of Verona beating out Follies was a disgrace; ditto Mister Roberts over original Streetcar Named Desire or Desperate Hours crowding out Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. And that idiot in I Am My Own Wife beating out both Christopher Plummer for Lear and Kevin Kline for Henry IV. You can pray, you can hope, you can reason it out, you can burn candles, you can do whatever and still many of the decisions will always astound. Reasoned guesses are anyone's prerogative, but the game ain't over until it's over.
Amen, Ed_Mottershead. But it sure is fun to guess.
"Y'know, I think Bertolt Brecht was rolling in his grave."
-Nellie McKay on the 2006 Broadway production of The Threepenny Opera, in which she played Polly Peachum
hahaha, at least Reidal was wrong. Anybody else think Martha Plimpton's nod for Top Girls was semi-based on the fact that she turned out an awesome performance in Cymbeline, but the category was already full? I'm sad about Cheyenne, Mary, John Bucchino, and Rosie Perez AND CRY BABY!?
Young Frankenstein was totally robbed. The score is by far a much more mature Mel Brooks score and in my opinion one of the best original Broadway scores in many years. The Producers was great but for the score of Young Frankenstein, he outdid himself in every way. Roger Bart was fantastic, Strohman did a wonderful job. This was a HUGE snub to a fantastic show with one of the best scores in years. I am debating whether I will watch at all, because I will only be upset. I guess the famous political system has overtaken the Tony's just like the Academy. How sad it is! This should have a best score, best actor, best musical nom at the very least. This sucks major!
