Fun Musical Recommendations?

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a newish musical to take an out-of-towner to. I don't really want to re-see anything I've seen already (which includes Avenue Q, The Producers, Spamalot, Spelling Bee and quite a few more of the fun shows on Broadway), so I'm looking for something entertaining, but newer...

I've heard good things about Spring Awakening and Grey Gardens, can anyone vouch for these?

SA and GG are not fun musicals. I would say they are more like a piece of art.

For fun I would see Legally Blonde. I would recoment Curtains as well but have not seen it.

In the Heights is a great deal of fun.

People like Mamma Mia.

Going to a musical late in its run is like going to a prostitute late in her shift.

Even though Spring Awakening and Grey Gardens aren't fun and fluffy, you should see them sometime anyway.

Check out The Drowsy Chaperone if you haven't seen it already.

Grey Gardens is an amazing and wonderful show, but certainly not fun. It's an emotional roller coaster. I highly recommend it.

Legally Blonde is your best bet if you just want to see a "fun show".

Also, some REALLY good shows: Spring Awakening and The Big Voice: God or Merman?. Both are AMAZING.

I agree, if you want fun, you can't do better than Mamma Mia. I'm seeing it again in Minneapolis in June. It will be my fifth time!

Mamma Mia is a tourist trap. I don't reccomend it. Just my honest opinion.

Mamma Mia, Legally Blonde, Mary Poppins, The Drowsy Chaperone and Wicked are fun shows.

If you want quality, stick with Grey Gardens, Company, or A Chorus Line.

Thanks, guy!

I've actually seen Drowsy Chaperone (loved it, but, as a Canadian, I can't help being disappointed I didn't see it with Jonathan Crombie... Gil Blythe!), Mary Poppins and Wicked.

I appreciate all the recommendations, though, I'll have to look into all of them!

I don't recommend "Legally Blonde"...though it might be fun-ish, it kinda sucks and your IQ might go down by a few points.

"Curtains" is fun though! Act One has a terrible book, but that's the only thing really wrong with it. Great numbers and wonderful dancing.

Vivs ~ Jonathan Crombie's not in it anymore. Now it's John Glover. There have been some cast changes, so in a way it's new again.

Still...I don't know...since I live here I see a lot. It would be really unfair of me to say to my parents or friends when they visit "Oh, I've seen that. I don't want to go again." I try to let it be THEIR trip. (My exception is I refuse to see Talk Radio again. Why not ask them what they'd like to see? Just a thought.

I saw Curtains, since Drowsy is off the list. Better quality "fun" show then Legally Blonde. Fantastic choreography. Lots of Broadway stars-- And David Hyde Pierce has universal appeal.

I'll jump on the Curtains bandwagon, and also mention Hairspray since no one else has.

Another vote for Curtains. I haven't seen LB so can't offer an opinion way or another.

CURTAINS is IMMENSE fun, and David Hyde Pierce is worth the $110 all by himself. A vote for CURTAINS here! ^_^

I loved Mamma Mia and so have my out-of-town friends.

I HATED Hairspray ! I felt like asking for my money back after that mess of a show.

Drowsy Chaperone makes me smile from ear to ear. Can't imagine much more fun that that. Curtains is a second choice. Have to agree with the iq points on Legally Dull er Legally Blonde. Avoid at all costs.

I also agree about Hairspray - what an awful 2 and a half hours.

If you're considering The Drowsy Chaperone I highly recommend not listening to the soundtrack prior to seeing the show as it may ruin some of the jokes.

I adore Spring Awakening. It's an amazing show. However, it is not one that you should see if you are looking for bubbly fun. There are funny moments, but it's a very deep piece.

And I'm a Hairspray lover. Go see Hairspray. Or The Drowsy Chaperone.
