Did I miss something? Where does this mention Bway? Isn't this just talking about the UK production? (And truthfully, I didn't read all the posts, just glanced to see if she mentioned anything about NY.)

because she put an american flag on the tweet. Honestly, i don't want this production to come to broadway. I want a big flashy Funny Girl with an updated book, directed by Bart Sher, starring an unknown or Jessie Mueller. Thats what I want.

I see no indication that she is talking about Broadway. I also don't see an american flag. Not enough evidence if you ask me.

The mobile tweet POL linked didn't have the flags. I did see the flags on a different link - but when I tried to link it - the ink didn't work. Regardless, she says "short run" and we all know that Ryan Murphy supposedly has exclusive Broadway rights.

There is no way this girl will lead a major reivival of Funny Girl. To many people have been waiting for a longtime for the real thing. Besides I'm not sure anyone can mount a large production on Bway until Ryan Murphy doesnt own rights.

I've said this before, but since we're talking about it on Broadway, as soon as Ryan Murphy looses the rights - which he will -, somebody will pick it up. I would love to see Annaleigh Ashford play Fanny on Broadway. I mean, she's HILARIOUS, she can nail the score with the unshaken confidence for love that Fanny needs, and she can easily be made into a not so pretty girl. Also, have you seen these promo pictures from "Masters of Sex" in which she's totally rocking the signature Funny Girl look? Jessie Mueller would also be an amazing choice, of course. But I think Annaleigh has the punch it needs as well as the comedy. I feel Jessie would make more of a safe Barbra choice. Of course, I'm biased on Annaleigh, but the way she played Maureen in RENT shows she can take an iconic role and make it new. Just my opinion, but I think she'd be the best choice for a Broadway run.

I think you mean, "a relatively minuscule amount of people have been waiting a long time for a Broadway revival". There has never ever been a high demand for a Broadway revival.

There is no way this girl will lead a major reivival of Funny Girl. To many people have been waiting for a longtime for the real thing.
Sheridan's former lover, James Corden, rolled into Broadway and picked up a leading actor Tony for One Man, Two Guvnors. And now he's a big time American late night talk show host. It's not out of the realm of the possibility that she could ride a revival to Broadway.
The fact is that the last time Funny Girl was on Broadway was 50 years ago (except of course for the concert version in 2002). There have been several actresses over the years who could have done the show. I think at this point people are expecting a revival just to get it done.
Sheridan is extremely talented. I think she can play the role and do it well. My only concern is that she really doesn't fit the type. I don't want a spunky, cheeky Fanny. I want one that I can believe is Fanny Brice. There's a certain "borscht-belt" feeling that the show needs. I hate to keep harping on "she needs to be Jewish" but the actress needs to have that Lower East Side Jewish sensibility.
And I hate to keep harping on this, but when you're served crap like Rosie O'Donnell in Fiddler on the Roof, you lose a sense of what the material should be. Is it too much to ask for a Lower East Side Jewish girl?
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

It sounds like Ryan wants it more than Lea does. Also, Anna Kendrick would be a terrible choice.

Lea Michele would be a terrible choice. She has zero sense of comedy. Those Ziegfeld Follies scenes will fall flatter than a pancake with her trying to do the comedy.
I've sort of forgotten, does the actress have to do any of the Baby Snooks material in Funny Girl? I can't even begin to think of Lea Michele doing Baby Snooks.

No, there's no Baby Snooks material in the show. It takes place before Snooks was created, although in the movie Barbra appears in her costume around the end.

Why do people even want this show? It's pretty poorly written and the score is not Styne's best by a long shot. The only reason the show works is as an excellent star vehicle, and there is absolutely nobody who could demand a new production of the show. Plus, we already have the movie with Streisand who plays it magnificently. Honestly, though. What's the point.

I would say the point could be a brilliant re-imagining with (as you noted) an amazing star turn.
No one was asking for On the Town (least of all me) but it ended up being an incredible production.
Funny Girl is not a favorite of mine either (I find it a bore to be honest) but I would love to have a new and exciting production change my mind.

Because there is a whole generation out there who never got the opportunity to see the original stage version of the show with all the original material that was deleted for the film version. The film version differs quite a bit from the stage show.
It's okay if you don't care to see a new production, maybe you were fortunate enough to have seen the original production but others have not and many on this thread have expressed interest in seeing a new production.

That's absurd because I've read Mimi Hines kept the show running for quite awhile after Streisand left the show, so there's proof that there are other actresses that could handle the role of Fanny Brice and be successful in it.
