Looking at the Nielsens, "Glee" averaged a 3.5 rating/9 share in adults 18-49 and 7.50 million viewers overall with its official series premiere. It easily won its hour in demos despite facing three reality shows ("America's Got Talent," "Wipeout" and "Top Model") that also score well with young auds.

Best news came in adults 18-34 (3.7 rating/11 share) and women 18-34 (5.4/15), with the show rating notably higher in both categories than did the preview episode of "Glee" that aired behind "American Idol" in May.

Great to see the ratings, but I think your thread title is in error. Doesn't Glee follow SYTYCD, rather than being against it?

Nope. His heading is correct as GLEE brought in better ratings than SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE. Yes, GLEE followed it but more people tuned in to the series than the dance competition show.

no.

it's not bad either.

the commercially successful dramas of the past five years (desparate housewives, lost, heroes) drew in double digits.

friday night lights (critical success) premiered with 7 million viewers and has struggled to stay afloat, actually being saved from cancellation multiple times.

FNL is shown in the fall on DirecTV first, then re-runs on NBC in the spring for the non-satellite subscribers, yes.

Since the ratings were based on the "official premiere," I'd say this was great since it was an episode that was released in May and is available on-line. I'm more curious about the 2nd and 3rd shows episodes.

The President was on every network but Fox which could explain why Glee did better than SYTYCD.

Actually, Anna_Elizabeth, the second episode is the one they're calling the "official premiere." For some reason they've decided to think of the actual first episode as a sneak preview, not the season premiere.

At first, I thought the whole airing-the-pilot early was suicide, but it seems to have built some nice buzz for them.

My daughter and I (she's 12) loved the pilot and were so excited for the new season. I had to turn it off during the "arrive too quickly" scene. Went back and watched it later, and it got even more "mature". Sadly, won't be letter my 12-year-old watch this.

Just a warning to parents: this isn't "High School Musical". TIVO and watch yourselves before you let your kids watch.

Seems like most of that (including the "arrive too quickly") would just go over a 12-year old's head.

But are you surprised that a show about 16-18 year olds and their teachers -- from the creator of a VERY edgy show about plastic surgery and LOTS of sex -- wouldn't be aimed at a 12-year old?

And I think it's one of those shows that works on different levels for different demographics.
