GLORY DAYS.

Damn. What a harrowing AND heroic experience for those guys. Distressing both on finances, resumes and self-esteem... but at least they can say they DID it.
In bad-taste, I'd joked about it after attending First Preview; but now truly, Jeff Bowen can add another Playbill to his collection.

Posted: 5/7/08 at 5:06pmI feel bad for Nick Blaemire...he created this one-performance bomb and is currently in the ensemble of what will inevitably be another flop (and will probably be posting a closing notice within the next month and a half or so if they're smart), Cry-Baby.

Posted: 5/7/08 at 5:08pmOuch. I thought it would at least wait it out until the Tony nominations. Not that it was getting any.

Ouch. I thought they might get a best score nomination, but not even now. Looks like they'll have no choice but to throw it to Mel.
It's depressing, though-they're probably pretty talented, but the show really wasn't ready for Broadway.

Posted: 5/7/08 at 5:09pmNot to thread-jack or anything, but when was the last time a show actually closed on opening night? I honestly cannot remember any show in recent memory closing after one performance. Does anybody know?

Dag! It's closing is already noted on IBDB.

Ah, damn. That's a shame.
Well, we can be optimistic, can't we? That these guys will keep going with the musical theater and, one day, write something that's great. Then we, and they, can look back and say, "If these guys can have a 1-performance bomb and then make this, something great can happen to you, too!"

From the producers:
Producers John O’Boyle and Ricky Stevens said, “We adore Glory Days and everyone connected with this production. Sadly, given the over-night reviews and our low advance sales, we believe it is prudent to close the show on Broadway immediately.”

Posted: 5/7/08 at 5:14pmA reliable source has told me that Eric Schaeffer was essentially told before the show opened that the Producers expected that they would probably close it right after the opening. Though this is definitely second hand, it does not appear that the show was capitalized properly. I think we will probably hear more about this as time goes on.

From BROADWAY.COM:
Just before opening night, Blaemire—who is currently acting on Broadway in Cry-Baby—sounded a philosophical note in discussing Glory Days with Broadway.com, saying, "As much as I welcome anyone's opinion, I have to stick to my guns. I'll survive. Because at the end of the day, it's just a musical."

Posted: 5/7/08 at 5:15pmI wonder if it will be the butt of all the jokes at the Tony's

re: GLORY DAYS closed per playbill#44
Posted: 5/7/08 at 5:18pmIf the creators of "Glory Days" believe in their work, they should go back to the drawing board and develop it further (sans Eric Shaeffer of course).

hearing the same thing from a reliable source, musicalman2.
I'm hearing that Producers had all intentions to close after Opening Night. they were too far in the "hole", financially, to get past Previews.
too bad.
Bustopher - and how, exactly, do we KNOW (for a fact) that these two will be back with a sucessful musical anytime soon? it doesn't matter what the concept is. if it's the same caliber work next time around, it'll be a flop too! sorry boys.
Nick. stick to being IN the shows... not writing them!!

I wonder if it will be the butt of all the jokes at the Tony's.
It probably will be although I hope they're not too harsh on it. At least it was an ATTEMPT (however feeble) at something fresh and new unlike the recycled, crappy, boring garbage that runs forever and ever (cough cough GREASE).

Posted: 5/7/08 at 5:19pmIf DAYS is the butt of the Tony jokes, those who worked on the Tonys should shoot themselves. It's just not a show you can take pleasure in watching explode (to paraphrase Matthew Murray).

Posted: 5/7/08 at 5:20pmmy thoughts exactly shh282. it's also a shame because it kind of puts a warning out to producers who are interested in producing an unknown, small-scale production.
