--- "Why are we mourning this? The show stunk. The problem wasn't "not ready/appropriate for Broadway." It just wasn't good--not the story, not the nonexistent character development, not the charisma-less performances."
Glad you said that, FrontRow.
I've been getting really tired of the comments suggesting that it deserved/should have had a home Off-Broadway. Sure, an Off-Broadway venue would better suit the piece than one on Broadway (which just saying feels awkward because this had NO business whatsoever on Broadway and the critical reaction/closing prove that), but that doesn't mean it should even be playing Off-Broadway. The show just isn't really any good.
The writers, I'm sure, will keep learning and working. Maybe they'll have a more successful outing later, but this piece is what it is.

I just got done reading all the reviews for this show that someone posted on the castrecl list. I swear, reading all the reviews took longer than the actual run of the show!
Anyway, I feel sad that this happened (the closure), but hey, you live and you learn, either to write/produce better musicals, or to go into another field. At least they had the opportunity, which a lot of people don't seem to get these days.
Anyway, I put in my order for the Opening/Closing night Playbill, so even though I didn't get to see it, I'll have a part of theatre history (infamy).

Let's look on the bright side, people will always remember that this show closed after one performance (a rarity these days).
That being said, I wonder who sold the producers on this show? Was it the small show, large profits concept (i.e., Avenue Q)? There had to be a business plan and return on investment somewhere along the way.

Interesting- come back in ten years and see how many say they were there
re: GLORY DAYS closed per playbill#105
Posted: 5/7/08 at 7:31pmIts a shame but hopefully the writers are passionate enough about theatre that they will dust themselves off and try again

Posted: 5/7/08 at 8:06pm23 years - isn't that the age of these writer's? or did I make that up?

Haha. I think they ARE 23.
I'm just kind of taken by this whole thing. I didn't think I would experience a show closing in one night anytime soon. And I didn't even see the show!
It still feels kind of cool... in a weird way.

Let me ask you something---
These are two men. Two ADULT, GROWN men. Why do you all feel the need to act like they're 10 year olds and pity them more than you would Andrew Lloyd Webber? It's absolutely ridiculous. Their show stunk. Period.
Personally - I think this is brilliant and amazing because I totally called it at the first preview.

Are you directing your question to me?
No. I am doing it as his friend. I have 57 posters friends here at BWW and they can ALL attest to you.. that when its their b-day, or bought a house or sick or even finish a thesis... I write on their wall and give them gifts like congratulations, b-day cake..etc...its just me!
Is that wrong?

First, the usual joke:
How long till bryan starts petitioning for a cast recording.
Now the seriousness:
This sucks. This really does. On the one hand, you have to respect them for knowing when to throw in the towel. I felt the same way when I heard High Fidelity was closing. On the other hand, these guys have nurtured this piece and their dream has basically come true and been crushed at the same time. It's really sad.

Posted: 5/7/08 at 9:29pmYes, we should expect high quality work to be on Broadway, but that we should judge young, inexperienced, up-and-coming writers the same way we would someone with decades of experience? That seems ridiculous to me.

Posted: 5/7/08 at 9:43pmWe did it to Tom Kitt. We did it to Amanda Green. We do it to Georgia Stitt, to JRB. I mean, really, guys. They're adults. They're composers.
