Yes, CONFEDERATE WIDOW closed on opening night in 2003.
Thanks Dolly and WickedRocks. From what I hear, it used to be an almost regualar occurance that shows would close on their opening nights if reviews were bad and there was no advance.

and how, exactly, do we KNOW (for a fact) that these two will be back with a sucessful musical anytime soon? it doesn't matter what the concept is. if it's the same caliber work next time around, it'll be a flop too! sorry boys.
Tom Kitt wrote HIGH FIDELITY. Then he wrote NEXT TO NORMAL.
You're right, we don't know. But we can hope.

Sorry I didn't get to see your show, Jesse!
He'll be cast again very soon I'm sure...
re: GLORY DAYS closed per playbill#56
Posted: 5/7/08 at 5:24pmWow that seemed do sudden. I was even planning to see it one of these weekends. I didn't know the reviews were that bad...

Last night I predicted that GLORY DAYS was going to be the next HOME SWEET HOMER. Looks like I was right!
I am thrilled to have seen the first preview of this show. Wow. I never I would actually see a one-performace flop musical in my lifetime.

Better to have had a show on Broadway and flopped, than to have never had a show on Broadway.
Congratulations to the Cast, Crew and Creative Team of Glory Days.. you accomplished something the many have only dreamed of!

I do feel bad for all the cast and crew.
I would like to state that there is some nastiness and blame put on Eric Shaeffer. He is very well liked here in Washington DC and is very talented. I do not know him personally (Although I would love to work with him seeing as his shows are really great)
I think it was just the buzz that started down here was so intense and it just grew. These guys had a lot written about them in the Washington Post and poeple in the theater were buzzing about them. I mean they were ONLY 23 & 24.
But I hope they do not give up hope. Look at Sondheim-- he has had some catastophies and he is one of the most beloved in the industries.

Ha...I actually think it might remain vacant for a while. A lot of shows already have theaters set for next season. 9 TO 5 will definitely be looking at a bigger theater.
They should put [title of show] in the CITS. It'll do much better there than at the Lyceum, IMO.

[tos] or 13 would be good shows to go to the Circle.
there was a recent musical added to the ridiculously cramped season of '08/09 that is looking for a theatre... they could head to the Circle. does anyone remeber which one it was? damn.

I sincerely hope [tos] thinks about opening at Circle in the Square.
Unless a show is extremely popular or has a huge star in it, most shows at the Lyceum tend to never do well. I think it would be infinitely more successful at Circle.
If not, I could very easily see 13 going there. But [tos] seems like such a perfect fit.

Toodarnhot.. you are smart, do I really need to explain the ultimate point of my post?
These guys did someone, regardless of the outcome, that writers spend there whole lives to accomplish.
They had their chance.. their moment in the spotlight.. it didn't work out. But they can now honestly say they are BROADWAY writers.
How many out there banging away at their keyboards can say the same?
So.. yes, I can safely say that they accomplished something that MANY only get to dream of.

Dude, [tos] has already booked the Lyceum. July.
13 should eye the Circle though... it'll have 2 kid-shows as apropos predecessors.

joking around, of course, BFB.
they're young.... if they are really cut out for Broadway songwriting, they'll be back.
but now they're the first writing team for a one-performance flop since 1983! that must be tough to swallow.
I thought 13 already booked the Jacobs? am I crazy?

Posted: 5/7/08 at 5:38pmI hope everyone who was so brutal about this show before its unfortunate demise are pleased with themselves. I guess the poor little hypocrites will have to wait a full six weeks before they can start damning their next victims. Gee, guys and gals, doesn't this make you feel like a better person? PS. Get a life.

call me crazy but we weren't the only ones who were brutal.... the advanced ticket sales were BRUTAL and the critics were mostly BRUTAL.
don't try and get so righteous or something. did you even SEE the show???

Why are we mourning this? The show stunk. The problem wasn't "not ready/appropriate for Broadway." It just wasn't good--not the story, not the nonexistent character development, not the charisma-less performances. This is a GOOD review of it:

We have to be nice because a couple of 23 yrs olds wrote it? They were damn lucky someone chose to move it to Bway. What about all the other 23 or 33 or 53 or 73 yr old artists who've never gotten that chance?

Posted: 5/7/08 at 5:44pmYou know, unfortunately, one of the realities of this internet age is that negative information about a new show travels much faster now. Same thing for shows working out of town pre-Broadway. Producers just have to keep that fact as part of their calculus on development of a show.
