I would really like to see a "Hercules" stage production, Disney's version. The muses seem so Broadway-ish to me. They remind me of the Urchins from Little Shop.

devonian.t, BIG FISH is my favorite movie, and I have also thought it would make an amazing and very original/creative stage musical!

There was a truly powerful movie which was released in 1992 called The Power of One.
The African-chanted music in THE POWER OF ONE was composed by none other than THE LION KING's Lebo M. (I believe the score for THE POWER OF ONE was also by Hans Zimmer, who composed the instrumental score for THE LION KING too.) So if anything, if THE POWER OF ONE were to be adapted for the stage, it would feature lush, wonderful music from Lebo M.

Moulin Rouge!
And I've been saying for THE longest time, Mulan: The musical!
BUT, it also sounds like a themepark show....

Yes puppets and projections would all put the eerie magical effect of The Nightmare before Christmas to great work on stage. It would be a good move for Disney.

Or we could hope for something really wacky like a hit that is NOT based on a movie

Wow BlueWizard, no wonder The Power Of One was so fantastic. I had no idea Lebo M. and Hans Zimmer had a hand in it. I loved the story which is an epic example of the cruelty of apartheid, but it was the music that captured the moment and drew me in as if I was there.
Oh it would be so successful if they adapted it to a musical and though it is a very contoversial story, like many controversial stories that have preceeded, it would run for decades I'm sure.

"Nightmare" was brought up in a meeting at Buena Vista Theatrical Productions at one time. Obviously nothing materialized.

Awesome idea... Danny Elfman's score would translate beautifully on stage (and maybe they can persuade him to write a few more number), and who knows? maybe some more musicals??? ok, ok, getting too excited now!

I second Newsies and Hercules. Not sure about Nightmare. I didn't care for the film at all. Some good tunes, but the story left much to be desired. Big Fish was also a major letdown. Other than the visuals, it seemed there was little of Burton in the film. It was emotionally stagnant.
I'm not sure Power of One's subject could beat Sarafina, in which the cast were actual survivors of apartheid in battles that mirrored the story they told.
MisterRussell - What's more lame than not using the search feature? Spending your time typing out a bitchy post telling people to use the search feature in a thread you obviously think is a waste of time. THAT would be a lameass thing to do.

There was a time when I envisioned just about everything I read or saw as a possible future musical, and having been completely enamoured with The Power of One (book, movie, and movie score) throughout my teens I thought about it a lot. The older I get, though, the more I realize that we have different media for a reason. It was a great book, and worked well as a movie (though the plot was substantially changed there). I don't think it sings, however, and I'd rather have an amazing film to remember than a mediocre musical.
Then again, I thought Light in the Piazza would have no merit after reading the novella, and I'm quite fond of what Adam Guettel has produced for it, so maybe it's just a matter of getting the right kind of talent involved.
In the case of Danny Elfman, I'd prefer to see him pick an original property and write it from scratch. Nightmare Before Christmas has some fun songs in it, and the visual translation to stage would be interesting, but the story never captured me. I also think that the seasonal nature of the piece would pose some challenges for a healthy run on Broadway.
