Posted: 6/20/07 at 1:16pmWhat with all the increasing interest in the two Edies -the two documentaries, the up comeing movie etc etc -can we hope that before this great and classic piece of theatre closes on Broadway it can be filmed for DVD. There are many shows out there already on DVD and many that unfortunately didnt get filmed- PLEASE dont let Grey Gardens be one of the latter. The producers should take advantage of all the stuff thats out there creating interest. It will sell.

Both that 2nd follow-up documentary on GREY GARDENS and that Jessica Lane/Drew Barrymore film were in development way before the musical appeared.
The musical didn't stir interest in these projects.

Well, I'm going to be possitive. This show will be recorded somehow. Ebersole's performance has been hailed as something that will become legendary. I don't think PBS or HBO or some TV station will miss the chance to tape it. If it isn't filmed on Broadway, it will be filmed on the West End.

Exactly. Many already have the bootleg DVDs of both the Playwrights Horizon and Broadway incarnations of the show. Each one was shot incredibly well (almost broadcast-type filming), so an official one would be barely an improvement on the ones already out.

Correction -- I'm not a 'bootlegger'. I just seem to come across them, that's all. I don't film nor record them, so I'm not a 'bootlegger'. HUGE difference.

For those interested -- here's a quality sampling of the DVD from the Playwrights Horizon incarnation of the "Daddy's Girl" number with Gettelfinger and Cavanaugh:

Posted: 6/20/07 at 2:18pmBootlegs are fine, and are a great archive for unrecorded shows, but I hardly think there as good as a professional recording. For me, I just think that there's so much more that is captured. You get a better sense of the atmosphere of a show, the lighting/set is seen as it should be, not to mention the advanteges of close ups, and pans, etc, which add in the flow that a normal theatre goer's eyes fill in. Bootlegs are great, I just would rather have a professional recording.

I think broadway and theatre in general is WAY behind the times when exploiting technology. Unions and Producers need to get together and explore ways of preserving live performances and making them available to a mass audience.
Seeing broadcast performances on PBS only whet my appetite to see the shows live. I don't think Sweeney Todd would be as popular today if the tour hadn't been recorded and so easily available.
Other forms of entertainment seem to "get it". The demand for seeing a sport event live only increases with broadcast.
Also, how can young theatre artist learn their craft without seeing what directors and actors have done. I can say that I've seen Richard Burton in Hamlet, when I wasn't even born when it was filmed. I know something about his choices and the staging that no amount of written description could convey.
I don't know how it can be done, but I franky think it must be done if live theatre is going to thrive and not just survive.

Posted: 6/20/07 at 4:26pmYeah, I remember the announcements about the reocrding of Caroline or Change for HBO or Showtime or whatnot. Announcements mean nothing other than a bit of publicity. If you count your chickens before they hatch, you'll just end up with a bunch of rotten eggs.

Right on BigFatBlonde
The Grateful Dead built a loyal audience to the point that they were the biggest touring act in the late '80's/early '90's because of the availability of live shows for their fan's listening pleasure. It didn't hurt tix sales but actually increased them. Look at this archive available to us: http://www.archive.org/details/GratefulDead How cool would it be to go to a sight like this and at any time pull up classic performances from classic shows?
You may not like the show but there were some Spring Awakening clips up on youtube and the fans from outside of NYC were just eating it up, they were eventually pulled. I bet that got more kids to by OBCR then that lousy Tony medley. There was no monetary gain made by those posting these clips, just a fan trying to spread some love for a show he/she dug. What is so wrong with that?
