I saw this last night and enjoyed it quite a bit. I thought it was funny, well staged and Andy Karl did a great job. I have to admit I've never seen the film before. And this one really worked for me.
I saw the show this afternoon. I loved Andy Karl and I loved the score, but I thought the show had some structural issues in Act 2 that were problematic.

Anyone know what the refund policy is for Andy'a abscence is?
"
What? The quote is from a "cynical Tony voter" saying perhaps Platt should "break his arm for real" to measure up to Andy's performance after his injury...
"
Yes. That was exactly my point. What?

I would never begrudge an actor, like Ben Platt, who doesn't want to stage-door. All he owes an audience is his performance onstage. Anything else is a bonus. That said, a good friend of mine and huge fan of ''Evan Hansen'' went 3 times to stage-door in hopes of getting an autograph, and waited over an hour before the crowd was told that Platt would not be coming out. If you're the star, and you know lots of people are waiting for you to come out and sign, it would be more courteous to have the doorman announce early on that Platt won't be signing, so you don't waste the time of your fans.

Waymon, was your friend actually seeing the show those "3 times" -- or just showing up after the show in hopes of getting an autograph?

My friend went to see the show the first time. Waited with a giant crowd at the stage door. Platt never came out. Thinking that it was off-night, he tried again on two other nights. No luck. He said if he weren't such a big fan of the show, he wouldn't have gone back.

I see what you are saying. I was there Wednesday night a week ago and decided to stage door just in case Platt might come out. Only Rachel Bay, Laura and Will did. It was well over an hour until security announced no one else was coming out. I still enjoyed the experience of it all.

Getting back to Groundhog Day: Here's the cast singing some selections for Billboard.

Love acting/emotion they put into it, even though it's just publicity.
Giving Ned Ryerson one of the most poignant songs in the show was brilliant and John Sanders nails it.

Caught yesterday's matinee and thought Andy Karl was outstanding. The first act was terrific and that car chase is ingenious! The second act became repetitious, mostly due to the nature of the material and that revolving stage soon became tiresome.

I saw the show a few days ago and just really fell in love with it! I loved the car chase scene, I loved Andy's nuances, and I loved the *******SPOILER ALERT******** suicide scene. Anyone want to help me figure out how the hell they did that spoiler scene!? I'm just going crazy (as the audience did!) The only weakness in the show (at least on the night I saw it) was that I didn't feel like the two main characters really had any sort of romantic or other connection. That just fell flat. Otherwise I thought the performance was just filled with energy and it was like the cast was running a marathon, which was so cool to see!
How do they do it? Lots of doubles. It's fun, however, to actually figure it out as its happening. Incredibly well executed. (So to speak.)
"I loved Andy's nuances"
Is that a euphemism?
As far as the doubles - if you've ever seen this sort of thing before (like the Witch's transformation in Into The Woods) then it's quite easy to spot, even as it's happening. The old magician's trick of distracting the audience's attention from where the "thing" is really happening becomes obvious, once you're aware it's coming.
The night I saw it, each “switch” was clearly evident as it happened. The effect was still fun, and it got big laughs and a hand, but I was disappointed, as it detracted from what really needs to be – and should be – an entirely seamless trick. But then I read people’s reviews here and talked to friends, and no one else thought it was noticeable, so maybe they were having an off night when I was there. They were only about a week into previews, so that’s very possible.

Oh that sucks that you saw the switches. I was in the 2nd row so from my angle I somehow didn't see them though at one point I thought I saw someone else with a knee brace just like Andy's so it could have been a double. But who in the cast has a similar body to him to be able to double other than Andrew Call?

My guess is it's the hot dog vendor. He's tall and thinner and you never really see his face!

Not hard at all--just see if a few times and don't fall for the "follow the shiny thing" trick. It's easier if you know where Andy will end up

Just FYI, Andrew Call will be on as Phil Connors for the 2pm matinee this Sunday, 5/28. Andrew's Tweet.

For Tim Minchin fans, he's doing 2 shows at 54 Below next week. I assume he'll include something from GHD in his set.
