Well it just won Olivier awards for best musical and best lead actor so I doubt it's going to get bad ones. Theatre is theatre after all.

Good reviews/awards in the UK doesn't always translate to gold here (and vice versa). I doubt it will get raves, certainly not across the board. I liked the show very much....but it's far from perfection.
It should be interesting to see if Andy Karl will get to go on tonight.
I AM SO NERVOUS!
Brantley will rave, but I expect the rest will be lukewarm with praise for Karl & the staging.

Completely agree with your predictions. We shall see!
Hoping it's a Critics Pick. Not that that does much anymore...
Looks like Andy will open the show tonight! https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/Breaking-News-Andy-Karl-Will-Go-On-for-Opening-Night-of-GROUNDHOG-DAY-Following-Weekend-Injury-20170417
Very interesting. The show is so intensely physical.
My immediate thought is - he could put on a good show tonight and perform for friends and family, be Tony eligible, and then call out the rest of the week to recover.
But who knows, we may have blown this whole injury out of proportion? Hoping it's the latter, but nevertheless, wishing the best to the Groundhog Day cast & crew!
Remember Brantley gave American Psycho a positive in London and then got way more mixed when it came to Broadway (even though the show was a million times better)

Jesse 21 on Talkinbroadway gave it 4 1/2 stars. A love letter to Andy and calls it the second first rate musical this season- the other being DEH. He saw the show on Thursday but does mention Andy's injury in his review (which I don't think was necessary)..

No love from Matthew Murray!
Karl was transformed after his accident, though, when his natural humility and heart became visible beneath the lacquer for the very first time. That man is one you wouldn't mind hanging out with time and time again. But for Karl's impenetrable Phil and the rest of this inchoate Groundhog Day, once is more than enough.
Groundhog Day
Isn't it time for Matthew Murray to go live in a hermit cave somewhere? He hates everyone and everything.
It's sad. I just presume his reviews will be negative.

Lukewarm on the show, very positive on Andy Karl-- pretty much exactly what I expected.
I thought After Eight was Matthew Murray for a while but at least A8 likes a couple things a season. I stopped reading Murray because the only show I read a positive review for was The Roundabout Threepenny Opera that everyone loathed.

Cote's point about the show not knowing if it's about the town or Phil is spot on. The opening number is just wrong
It'd be nice if David Cote proofread/fact checked. The song he refers to is "Playing Nancy", NOT "Playing Rita".

True but you spelled HIS name wrong so
I guess Matthew Murray didn't like Andy Karl's acting until he was more natural and authentic after he got hurt.
Sadly my phone doesn't recognize "Cote" as a thing and autocorrected (which I should have caught, yes). But let's not pretend that an autocorrect typo and an entirely different name are the same thing.
