uhh is Anatole a comedic character? i've never thought of him that way
"
Lucas plays him as both comedic and threatening. I mean, he is VERY over the top (and intentionally so). He enters in a cloud of light like Jesus Christ, and in the Abduction holds a note for 20 second then winks at the audience after they go nuts. He constantly breaks the fourth wall in very clever spots.

And this thread, in particular, goes to show you why awards to recognize art that is interpreted subjectively are so damn arbitrary.

I haven't been onstage for this incarnation, but have heard they're terrific and to try to get more center seats (I believe those are considered premium).

Hey K, Thx again, we decided on cent orch 5th row...weren't sure about being on the banquettes and then seeing the backs of everyone's heads as they face front...
Seeing it with Dave Malloy is the trigger this time. We got 5/6 matinee..still seeing Josh again before he leaves too...and can't get enough of Lucas. Did you ever see Malloy?

I'm not a huge Comet fan, I'll be upfront. Found nothing memorable about Steele but granted I don't love the show.

I loved the show, but I thought Lucas Steele was struggling vocally when I saw the show. His voice cracked at least three times. Maybe he was sick, but he seemed very tentative.

An onstage premium Malloy seat is only $10 more than a much worse non-premium Groban orchestra seat, so quite a steal...

When I saw Great Comet Josh was out and indeed Lucas was the clear standout in a very uneven cast and overall production. Actually let's be honest the real star of Comet is the set. And just yesterday we saw Lucas really struggling on the Today show. Yikes.
I've seen Dolly 3 times and Gavin is giving the better performance. Pitch perfect every time and his chemistry with Kate and Taylor just keeps getting better and better. I hope he gets it...Gavin's rock solid on all levels.

I didn't notice Lucas struggling on the Today Show at all.

I think it's about who elevates the material more. I think Lucas Steele was funny and outrageous in Great Comet but I can see many Broadway actors with a very outsized personality shining in that role.
Gavin's character OTOH in the wrong actor can be very basic and generic. His storyline is fairly conventional, and his music is also the most conventional of the musical. But IMO he really made Cornelius very winning and worth caring about. His chemistry with Kate Baldwin and Taylor Trensch is very special.

I've seen him. He's great! I'm excited to hear him sing the big new aria he wrote for Groban. Groban definitely brings more to the role, but I feel like Malloy will probably match that now that he's seen Groban do it.

Thanks Madonna
We got great seats by Dave; so we're seeing 5/6 mat...
I saw Lucas on Today and he didn't look like he was having any trouble. Even if you think he may be "a little off" I guess he could have a bad day, like anyone. I still think, the performances he's giving after being in the show in the different incarnations for two or so years, that is one tough gig and I think he works really hard at it.

It sounds like the audience interaction portions of The Great Comet make individual performances wildly inconsistent. Personally I feel Creel is too conventionally sexy to play virginal bumpkin Cornelius but he's got two great songs to highlight his performance in that role.
Steele is in fine voice on the recording but he lacks a stand out song that would bring him attention on TV spots and award shows. The "Oh Balaga" excerpt on the Today Show feels like a generic "To Life" / "Life Is" / Happy Villagers number but it's one of the few stand alone songs to highlight.

I respectfully disagree... Yes, audience participation does dictate a response to comedy (as it does in every show). But Lucas has several stand-out moments where you just drop your jaw in awe and think, "This guy deserves a Tony." I'm thinking of how he nails that entrance in Act 1, his crazy falsetto in the newly released Letters, pulling out the violin in the Abduction and playing like a seasoned professional, and exiting on a belt note so high that most performers would sweat at the thought of it. Not to even mention the physical stamina of doing that role 8 shows a week AND staying with the show for 5 years. There are many other reasons why I think he deserves it, but I won't list them all in this post due to space
