Glenn Close as Madame Morrible?

Posted: 12/16/05 at 10:38pmWhat do you think? I passed through MARY REILLY today on HBO and this thought revisited me again. I've thought this probably since the Fall of 2003. I think she'd be great. Also, I don't think she would snub the role just because it's not a lead. I know she was Norma D., but I think she'd be fantastic and somewhat chilling as Morrible. It would be a completely different dimension. Just a thought.

Posted: 12/21/05 at 9:54amShe'd be wonderful but the role is too small. She can do the movie if it's ever made! I love the woman. I feel she can do pretty much anything. By the way does anyone know if the SUNSET BOULEVARD film is going to happen? And who is going to play opposite Ms. Close? Hugh Jackman or Ewan McGregor?

i don't think she'd ever do a replacement, especially after someone as awful as rue.
personally, i think it'd be hilarious and perfect for a guy in drag to do. the character is so over the top performance-wise and the look is something like a elizabethan dame edna :)
fyi, i believe i read on playbill.com a few months back that the sunset movie was indeed going to star ms. close and mr. macgregor

Posted: 12/21/05 at 10:20amI think she would be good, but would never do it. I think Doris Roberts would be good as Morrible, too. I know there was some talk about her moving into some other Broadway show (I think CHIGACO as Mama Morton). She can play that evil with a venir of nice SO well.

Posted: 12/21/05 at 11:14amThanks, adamgreer. I knew Chicago sounded wrong, but I couldn't think of what else she would have gone into. You're right about Millie.

I have no idea why I think it's so important to finally have another rich, complex interpretation of Morrible, but nonetheless, I persist.
What do you think of Estelle Parsons? I think she would do it. She's not a complete blockbuster, widely known broadway star, but she would "do it" for me. I think she'd take a replacement role. She actually has quite a low register instead of that fake voice she did on ROSEANNE. I think she'd be fantastic at interpretting "the switch" Morrible makes.

Posted: 12/22/05 at 11:13amElphabuff -- I would have agreed about Estelle Parsons about a year ago. However, after seeing her in "Harold and Maude" at Papermill, I no longer think she should have anything to do with Musical Theatre. She was horrid and boring in that role and her singing was pitiful. The material was a mess, but more importantly she did nothing with the material.
