My Jodie and my Kate?!?!
Oh God I think this is brilliant!
Seemed like a good idea, until I saw Roman Polanski is the director. I don't see his films, so I'll skip this.
I am in the same place with Polanski directing. How I wish it was someone else.
I highly recomend the people who "don't see his films" give "The Ghost Writer" a look-see. Regardless of his personal life he is a very talented director.
"Regardless of his personal life he is a very talented director."
Personal life? He fled the US to avoid prosecution for raping a minor. I couldn't care less about his personal life. It's his criminal life that keeps me away from his films.
I actually found THE GHOST WRITER to be mind numbingly boring.
I never defended his, okay lets call it criminal life. But a good film is a good film, and he is making them for you to enjoy. Honestly The Ghost Writer was one fo the finer films I saw this year so I think GoC would be handled well with his direction. That is why I am going only by his merrits as a film maker and nothing else.
Idunno, I see why you would think it was boring, but it's pretty rare you get a good old fashioned wittily written, film noir, mystery these days. I showed it to a group of friends and it didn't hold all of their attentions but those that did stay till the end all agreed it was very well made. A lot of good movies have that certain dull/dark factor to them but I think thats precisely what makes them good in a way.
Could be the next Best Picture at the Academy Awards but I won't support it either. Loved the stage show, was looking forward to the film version until I saw who the director is going to be.
Let's just say we agree to disagree on this subject.
Well said Huss. Lets move this along then, who would you have rather seen direct this film?
"I actually found THE GHOST WRITER to be mind numbingly boring."
Well, the book that is its source is awful, so putting that on screen was never a good idea. Polanski or not, I would never have seen that.

Jodie Foster? How dull.
I'm sure Waltz is playing the Jeff Daniels role, and Matt Dillon will be taking the Gandolfini role.
Which of the women will be playing which?
Ok good, I'm not the only one. Plus (and I love her) Kim Cattrall was baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.
Haha, this thread is dead set against me, but let me assure you many people did like this movie, me being one of them. I will surrender here and allow all of you to look down upon my taste in movies. Aside from the director I am a huge fan of Foster so am excited that she has lined up her next role since THE BEAVER is probably never going to see the light of day. Any thoughts on who you would have directed this film if the horrible talentless director Polanski didn't get it first?
"...who would you have rather seen direct this film?"
Mike Nichols
Yep, he fled the country due to charges of statutory rape 35 years ago. I'm not condoning or forgiving him, but y'know what -- so f***ing what?
Most people in Hollywood have done AWFUL things, some we know about, some we don't, and I have a feeling if you boycotted the films of every person in Hollywood who's done something you consider reprehensible, you wouldn't be seeing many movies.
For that very reason, I acknowledge that actors and filmmakers are just that: actors and filmmakers. They're not my friends. I judge them based on their art, and that's what I'm interested in. Especially when the aforementioned crime was decades ago, and others in the Broadway community have done far worse (it's just not reported), yet most of you continue blindly worshipping them.
Mel Gibson deserves to be hung by his nuts from the roof of a synagogue, but if he makes an interesting-looking film -- of course, I'll go see it.
Grow up people. This film (and this cast) sounds amazing.

Well it was more than statutory rape.
I was terribly excited when I saw the cast, and subsequently terribly depressed when I saw the director. I won't be watching it either.

Since the film is being set in Brooklyn, but shooting in Paris because Polanski can't enter the US, the production designer will definitely have a bit of a challenge on his/her hands with this.
It's got to be Dillon in the Gandolfini role and Waltz in the Daniels role, but the women could go either way. What stands out to me is how much younger Winslet is than the rest of these actors - she's 35; Waltz is 56, Foster is 48 and Dillon is 46. Will it be a Waltz/Winslet pairing a la the second replacement cast 'trophy wife' scenario with Baker and Liu?

He drugged and raped (orally, anally, and vaginally) a young girl, fled the country, and has been hiding out ever since. It was a lot more and much deeper than just having sex with a minor 'decades ago' (as if that's relevant) trivializes the matter. It was - and still is - a serious case and the fact that he gets a pass because he's a good artists is ridiculous. If some common Joe was a 'good artist', he wouldn't get a pass, so why should Polanski? I'm sure some people I'm a fan of aren't the best of people either and if that came out, I would stop supporting them too.
I'm really interested in the film, especially with this cast, but probably won't pay to see it.
He definately should NOT get a pass just for being a good artist. But the fact is that he is indeed not in jail and is making good films, so regardless of how those fims are coming about if they are good than people should just judge them as that, not refuse to watch them because they do not like the person responsible. The films are there, why not enjoy them?
"The films are there, why not enjoy them?"
Because doing so supports a man who raped a minor and fled the country to avoid prosecution. I make no judgment on those who see his films, or even those who choose to work with him. Personally, I couldn't live with myself if I thought that a penny from the price of my movie ticket wound up in his pocket, even indirectly.
