Most people in Hollywood have done AWFUL things
LOLZ. That statement is truly ridiculous. I'd love to know what awful things you're putting on par with this. Maybe it's just that child-rape is kind of considered one of the most awful of the awful that it's an issue? Some of the people on this board never cease to amaze me in what they excuse from celebrities.
I don't go out of my way to avoid Polanski's films, but I don't go out of my way to see them, either. I went to see The Ghost Writer because my dad was visiting and wanted to see it, but I would have otherwise taken a pass.
It's not like he committed the crime and paid for it. He fled the US and has lived a pretty spiffy life since then. I think THAT's the bigger issue for most people who are virulently anti-Polanski.

Much as I admire her, Jodie Foster and comedy, however broad or biting, are not on friendly terms. She's just too brittle and serious.
The story I read announcing it said that Jodie would have to start practicing her projectile vomiting, but that doesn't make sense given the fact that Winslet's youth would make her a more apt trophy wife.

"Because doing so supports a man who raped a minor and fled the country to avoid prosecution."
He'd already plead guilty. He fled to avoid punishment.

But Foster is definitely more of an Annette than a Veronica. She may not be the young trophy wife (but then again were Hope Davis or Annie Potts really either?), but she has the biting acerbity that Annette needs. Winslet on the other hand, is much more of a Veronica. She can play up the emotional motherly aspect incredibly well, regardless of her age.
Re: the Polanski thing. I think we're all in agreement that his actions were absolutely reprehensible. Some people choose not to support a man who has done such things, whereas some people choose to distinguish between the man and the artist.
What I don't get is why people are choosing to argue about *that*. Can't we just respect each other's viewpoints and leave it at that? You don't have to try brow-beating someone into your way of thinking, and it doesn't really matter one way or the other if you choose to watch Polanski's films or not.
Also, I really didn't think God of Carnage was all THAT. I enjoyed it well enough while I was watching it, but it slipped right out of my head after I left the theatre, and just left me longing for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. Still, I do like it when plays become films, if only because yay, a movie I'll be able to chat with people about! 8D

I am sooo there.
jntnx - I agree, The Ghost Writer was terrific.
Can't wait! Christoph Waltz is brilliant and Kate Winslet will be perfection. I really wanna know which role everyone is playing.
FirstShowing.net reports that John C. Reilly has replaced Matt Dillon to play Gandolfini's role. Also, Jodie Foster will take Harden's role, so Waltz and Winslet will play the other couple.

Hm, interesting. I would have thought Foster would play Annette. And John C. Reilly is surprising in his role as well, but I'm sure he can pull it off. Updated On: 10/19/10 at 05:49 PM

For those of you who "boycott" Polanski, did you see A TALE OF TWO CITIES? How are your feelings on Barbour?
Also: I, personally, don't give a damn about his "criminal life". Watching one of his films is like taking a masterclass in directing.
Moving on... is it certain Winslet is Ronnie?
^Stupid question. What did James Barbour do? Feel free to PM if you don't want to go into it here.

Cockeyed, I'm sorry if I offended - and wanted to this publicly because of that. I'm not actually of the party that has an opinion on Barbour either way. It's not my business, it was never "proved", etc. I just remember a backlash similar when TALE OF TWO CITIES was getting ready for its opening.
Just saying - did those who were "Anti-Barbour" see the show anyway?
Thought it was a similar argument. D'oh!
Winslet will be quite hilarious as Annette, I can't wait to see her in this.
Polanski is indeed a master of filmmaking, he's simply a brilliant director and I think his take on the material will be terrific. I seriously cannot wait to see what he does with this cast, it's quite impressive. Jodie Foster would have hardly been my first choice for Veronica (I find her to be completely and entirely humorless) but we'll see. The play is pretty thin in terms of substance, IMO, but I thought it was quite a fun afternoon at the theatre and a fantastic showcase for a great group of actors. Polanski really knows how to bring out a great performance out of his actors so I can only imagine he'll do a really good job with this.
Dave Poland (who saw the play on Broadway) had problems with the film:
