Hope that her reps instruct her to TONE DOWN that overtly bubbly cheeriness as it doesn't translate too well on TV. We on this board as familiar with her and know what to expect from her -- personality wise, but mainstream America just can't stomach all those flashy teeth smiles and bubbliness. She's already being called "that obnoxious italian fat chick".
Also, Tony needs to get on the ball and not underestimate what Marissa can do. If 60 year old Priscilla can muster a death drop spin, Marissa can certainly do actual ballroom-level choreography.
I'm quite sure that if she were partnered with Derek Hough (Julianne's brother), Marissa would have scored three perfect 10's. Those Hough kids are sensational choreographers as well as dancers. He wouldn't have modified anything for her -- just take a look at what he did with Jenny Garth last season AND she couldn't dance one bit when she started.
Tony may be a good/great dancer, but he sure isn't a good choreographer.
"Well, I hate to "Tony-bash" but this wouldn't be the first time that Tony has sacrificed content to go "against the grain" in the ballroom world. He's been chastised in previous seasons for pushing the envelope and bending (and sometimes breaking) the rules. I don't think based on what we saw that we can place fault on either Marissa or Tony." --------------------
Has he been chastised for that in the past? You're probably right but I don't remember it. I remember Kareena being chastised for not making Mario (a few seasons ago) follow the rules for particular dances. (Oh wait, maybe that was me chastising her in my mind.)
You're right, no need to find fault with anyone. It was the first night. She did great. Tony's a sweetheart. Whether he's a good choreographer I can't say. But he's sure cute. And so is she! I wonder if she'll find it hard to settle down for a slow dance.
"I'm quite sure that if she were partnered with Derek Hough (Julianne's brother), Marissa would have scored three perfect 10's." ---------------------- Except they don't give 10s to anyone on the first night (that I recall, I'm probably wrong again :) )
My mouth dropped when I heard the song she and Tony had to dance to. I agree with the earlier post about making her just the "big booty girl"...that's what I thought anyways.
I gave her 36 votes (12 on my cell, 12 on my home phone, 12 online). I REALLY want her to stay and get the chance to improve more and show everyone what a broadway star is worth! And I love, love, love her personality - she is absolutely adorable. All those haters who think she is too much (*cough*televisionwithoutpity*cough*)will just eventually give in!
She also happens appeal to three of my strongest personality traits/charateristics: A Jewish,not-size-0 Broadway diva!! I feel a kindred spirit vibe from her.
"Years from now, when you talk about this - And you will - Be kind. "
Since she's danced on Broadway, I expected...um...something different, but I guess ballroom dancing is a whole different thing. And she doesn't have the build for fast footwork. (Sorry, it's true.)
I thought she looked kind of clutzy last night. And I agree with the poster who said she's got to tone down the bubbliness ... it did come across as obnoxious.
I totally agree. "You Can't Stop the Beat" um... you gotta find it first. Marissa has no sense of rhythm and can't find the beat to save her life. In this regards, the judges last night were right on target with this one.
I just went back to my archives and even in HAIRSPRAY, she definitely CAN dance, but not to the 'beat'. Even in her manic little dance she does when she gets on The Corny Collins Show, she's all over the place but definitely not on any 'beat'. Looking at other Tracys doing the exact dance, they're all doing the little manic dance IN 'beat' to the music.
Marissa's lack of rhythm is also evident in ANY version of "You Can't Stop the Beat" (from the VH-1 Fashion Awards to the 2003 Tony Awards performance) she's performed. When she begins the number's dance intro, she is never in rhythm/beat to the music. Even when the quartet (Link, Tracy, Seaweed and Penny) do their unison dance section, she's always a smidgen off in sync with the others.
I love me some Marissa Jaret Winokur and seeing her on DANCING WITH THE STARS has been an unexpected disappointment. No worries... I AM voting for her, but she definitely isn't en par with the other ladies. Even Monica Seles (bless her little heart) at least has rhythm.
And she better tone down the self-pity-fest lest there be a backlash. Last season, one contestant had one leg, and this season one cannot hear the music, and Marissa is literally *sobbing* because....what? She has stubby legs?? Is overweight??
PS: I am too lazy to vote for anybody, but if I did, it would be for the best dancer, Kristi. It's "DANCING With the Stars". not "LIKING the Stars."
It was awful to see her face collapse when Carrie Ann was struggling to tell her what was wrong with her quickstep (I completely sympathized with Marissa, Carrie Ann was the opposite of articulate). She's more talented than most of the other contestants, but less disciplined, it seems--it'll be interesting to see how she does with the slower, more graceful dances. I really hope she survives the week--it would be incredibly embarrassing if she lost to Monica Seles.
I ask in all honesty/What would life be?/Without a song and a dance, what are we?/So I say "Thank you for the music/For giving it to me."
Penn Jillette and Kym Johnson are out of the competition. Shannon Elizabeth is the first woman safe from elimination. Will MJW get eliminated? If you voted for her, how many times did you vote?
I voted for her the limit of 12 times. I really hate how much they drag this results show out. An hour just to find out which two couples are eliminated is far too long for my taste. Updated On: 3/25/08 at 09:51 PM
Gosh, I'm nervous! I doubt they'll send her home over Monica but you never know how the voting will go.
