****Sorry this post is so long, I do hope someone out there takes some time to read it though and give their own opinions***
"I don't know this for 100% but I'm pretty certain that Kristin is making a movie (Asphalt Beach) or something..she has probably had to fly out to meet w/producers, casting directors etc. Plus, let's be honest LA is where the money is and I have heard many a Broadway performer (not all) talk about how they would love to do a t.v. show or movie, especially as they get older because of the stability. It seems to me as if Kristin is aspiring to bigger and better things beyond Broadway."
This is only my opinion here but...
I definitely agree the fact that many performers use Broadway when want to get a t.v show or movie. About stability though, if a performer is talented enough they can get stability.
But, I think, that even if they have dreams of hitting it big in LA and somehow able to find work there...they must take into consideration the commitment they have made. I'm sorry but if Broadway WAS like the tv/film industry in LA, and actors such as Kristin and Laura Benanti only showed up for a percentage of the time they are supposed to be working...I believe they would be fired...is that a correct assumption?
Also, in my opinion, if actors are only using Broadway shows as a springboard to get the attention of movie/tv producers and then plan to jump ship...I don't think I would want to see them anyway. Unlike some other people, I don't think that Broadway is a step down. I think if actors' are about performing and their craft and not $, then it can make their performance all the better. Maybe I'm crazy but I think actors should have a passion for the work they are doing, whether it be a show, movie or feature film. I'm not saying Kristin lacks this passion, but you would think an actor who absolutely loves their job would want to perform as much as possible.
A good number of actors who began their careers on Broadway, then moved on to bigger things....but don't seem to forget how they got their start. There ARE very successful actors out there who truly crave the challenge of performing on the stage. John Lithgow, Matthew Broderick, Glenn Close, Kathleen Turner, Stanley Tucci, Cynthia Nixon, Eric McCormack, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Helen Hunt...the list goes on.
Plus, many an actor has said they would love the chance to perform on Broadway. Julianne Moore and Nicole Kidman two good examples. They have both said they would love to perform on Broadway but because of the amount of time and energy involved in the show, they are holding off because they both have young children and they want to be as involved with then as much as possible with them. Performing in a show 6 days a week would make that difficult.
Also, what about Sally Field? She has two Oscars and two Emmy awards, but it was AFTER her film and tv success, she made her debut on Broadway in 2002. Plus, Megan Mullally, very sucessful in tvm but started in H2$ and Grease. I believe I heard quite a few times that she wants to return to the stage? In fact, she was signed to perform in an Actors' Fund "Funny Girl" benefit but had to back out. The benefit was supposed to be during a short break of "Will and Grace", but NBC changed their schedule, so the break was a week earlier than originally planned. She actually tried to take that day off so she could go to NYC, perform and then fly back for taping but NBC refused permission. So, because of her contract, she had no choice. (this is not a rumor, I heard it straight from Megan's mouth).
These are people who are not interested in money and do not view theatre as a step down!
It has to do with perfecting their craft. Live theatre is one of the most difficult genres and real actors love to challenge themselves.
Am I making any sense at all or have I truly lost my mind?
