Sadly, that is true. They were finally given the rights to record the album and they brought him in early to record his vocals, knowing that he was near his end, but it was too late.
Jeter spoke in interviews about the irony of them playing the two roles they played, with Carroll the seemingly healthy Baron and Jeter the dying man.
I believe Rex Smith, John Schneider and Walter Willison also played the Baron after Brent Barrett.
Erzlump, I love you!! I had no idea there was a second video of that number with the irreplaceable Jeter and Carroll. How wonderful to have an alternate version. I NEVER get tired of watching it.
I still think it's my all-time favorite Broadway memory.
I'm going to watch it two more times.... my husband works in this area!
So glad to see this! I saw most of the original cast and then a week before it closed. I loved Tommy Tune's staging of this musical.
