Does anyone know why "Grease" is SO popular this year for regional productions? In my neck of the woods, New England, Ogunquit is doing it, Theatre by the Sea, North Shore Music Circus....and I am sure there are more that I'm not aware of. Just wondering.....

I think because Barry Gibb is doing "Grease" on his Mythology tour. It's mythical!
They're also doing it at The Muny, and Paper Mill just started doing it with Robin De Jesus (Doody) and Telly Leung (Teen Angel) in the cast.
Add Paper Mill Playhouse and Fox's highly-anticipated live broadcast to that list. No major anniversaries or anything so I'm guessing it's just a coincidence. Or people really like Grease??? I know I do.
Nothing but a coincidence. Personally, I always think its over done.

Isn't Grease kinda always every where? I realize that it is being done by a couple of the better known regional theatres, but still it seems like it is being done many times every year. While it isn't an amazing show, it is a good "butts in seats" show due to its name recognition and general popularity.
It's also a fun, easy money type musical. Theaters know it will sell, and it's light-hearted and easy to cast, direct, design, etc. It's def. for the money. Although, most of them probably should have waited given the upcoming telecast. Or maybe they're snatching the rights because of the telecast, so everyone is doing it.
Also a fun little note: Taylor Louderman will be playing Sandy in both Paper Mill’s production and The Muny’s production this summer.
Because it's the word.
