i agree with the person who made mention that it's stupid to not help some of the starving Equity Actors out there and just go for a bunch of unknowns. Grease is going to end up becoming The Color Purple with a bunch of uncouth audience members screaming out because they think it's just like they saw on TV.
not to mention how many Today shows are going to inundate us with "recaps". ¤sigh¤ the television machine is just as tired as Grease is.
Does anyone have a band-aid I just slit my wrists!!!!

but if Grease is coming in June, itll have to wait for the 2008 tonys, and wont contend with company and all those others...
Ah, sorry, you're right.
and if they never announce the date those Company tickets go on sale, Company won't be able to compete for the Tonys either! hahahahaha

that's fine
:)
i wonder what revivals Grease will contend with in 2008...
Sure glad I wasted four years in drama school. Reality tv rules.

Add me to the chorus of "Please God, not another Grease revival" detractors.
Interestingly, they just had a reality show in Britain where they accepted submissions from unproduced playwrights and the winner had their play mounted for a run on the West End. The show went behind the scenes from the play winnowing and selection process, through casting and rehearsals to opening night. However in the end, the play got bad reviews from the London critics, so despite all the press and publicity, it ended up being a flop and closed early.
This makes my head hurt.

I don't think it's that big of a deal. I mean hell, I know I'll be watching. They're not casting the entire show with unknowns, it's just the two leads, correct? There will be plenty of Broadway people on the show. I just wish it was more of a reality show and not an "American Idol" type show. I mean what ever happen to that Patridge Family show on vh1? Nothing ever came of that. What if a theater isn't open for them in June '07? Will they just push something out?
I have never understood why "Grease" is so popular. The score is marginal at best, and most of the general public assumes the songs added for the film are also in the stage show. There must be something better to revive.
My soul just died a little.
Seriously, I see everything, even when it looks like the dumbest show in the world, I'll go see it. Even if it's a revival of a show I can't stand, I'll go see it. But ANOTHER Grease revival? Just the thought of buying a ticket made me feel a little tired...
I do agree, though, that no matter what show it is, it WILL generate more interest in Broadway, and anything that does that is okay in my book.

It'll contend with "High School Musical" in 2008...
sadly, it'll probably bring in the highest Tony viewer ship in a while! I love America.
I just wish we could generate more of an interest in Broadway without having to stoop to reality tv.
Agreed. I don't want THIS kind of interest in Broadway. Like I said, it's getting dumb enough.

Something that stuck out to me was that Phoenix Productions is one of the producers. They just recently finished a International Tour of "Grease" that my friend was on. I saw the tape and it was done VERY differently. First the Teen Angel was also Miss Lynch, who also happened to be a black female. And it really worked, and Beauty School was amazing and different. They also had all of the movie songs, and Johnny Casino which was also played by an amazing black male. Was changed, he opened Act2 with Shakin at the High School Hop and "Hand Jive" was song in a way different light that made it more interesting. It was a very different spin on the show with all the movie songs, and I thought it was a great idea. If they go anywhere with it like the tour that they did, I think that it would be pretty good.
"This is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard of. And shouldn't the director and producers be casting the show? What the hell does the viewing public know about this? Their voting record hasn't exactly been superb in the past."
Do you think the "common people" are really that stupid? Do I like Grease? No, not really. Will I watch this show? Probably not. But I can tell you this: many little girls love Grease. For example, my younger stepsister and all her friends love the movie and show, as did alot of my friends growing up. And these will most likely be the people voting. In some ways it makes sense to have people who love the show and who know the score inside and out, choose the character, rather than some producer out to make a buck.
And if you don't like Grease, or any show/tv show for that matter-here's something--don't go to it or watch it!!
Yes, I do think "common people" are that stupid. The "common people" are willing to pay to see another revival of Grease when new, original material can't even find a theatre. "Common people" are exactly who this whole idea is being marketed to in the first place.
And I won't be watching. Thanks SO much for the advice!

"We need to put Grease, Gypsy and Guys & Dolls under lock and key, and say, 'Do not open until the year 2045.'"
Completely agreed!
What a waste!!! Ugh!! Couldn't they do a current to help boost ticket sales(i.e. Hairspray, Wedding Singer, etc.). Maybe the TV show will be a hit and they'll renew it for another season and pick a different show to revive(thoughts??).
I did the Brazilian tour of the show, and having performed in 3 different productions of Grease, this one in Brazil was just a bit different. It incorporated the songs from the film and also added a tougher more realistic take on a somewhat fluffy show. I actually like the show, there is a lot of room for interpretation.
I think it would be a more interesting concept if they where going to cast the entire production from the competition. Have Rizzo, etc, categories and each week America chooses a different cast member. Just Sandy and Danny? Sandy is quite possibly the most boring character in musical theater history. Bummer. Fascinating concept. Poor execution.

GREAT IDEA.
I saw a tour of Grease (I'm pretty sure it was non-equity) just a year or two ago...was it a non-equity version of that revival? It seemed to be for some reason, but if the revival was ten years ago, then that's a long time to keep a tour going it seems like (for a mediocre revival, that is).
