A first peak at what the newspapers are saying...

My favorite part:
"Ms. Block played Elphaba in the show's early workshops, and you can only wonder why she didn't get the chance to create the part on Broadway. In this national tour, she sings with refined power and acts with telling subtlety. You don't want her off the stage for a minute."

Very cute review!

What a great review for Stephanie. Although I've not seen her play the role, I like the fact that she is reffered to as playing the role with subtlety, this is how I see Elphaba. Not the erratic witch that Shoshana portrays.

Oh, I forgot to add this earlier... I THINK the writer meant this as a compliment to Kendra. I would probably take it as one if it was about me. Definitely the most interesting way a portrayal of Glinda has been described yet, at least from what I've read!

"She comes off as a slightly chubby blend of Shirley Temple and Mary Catherine Gallagher in the first act, a young Bernadette Peters in the second."

I would recast Kendra and Derrick Williams. I most certainly would never call her a young Bernadette Peters.

Thanks for posting this. I hate living in New York because I can't see Stephanie, but o well I guess I'm just stuck with Broadway, damn! jk

I wouldn't compare her to Bernadette! I think Kendra did a good Glinda. She made it her own. And, as I have said before, the night I saw the show Ms. Block seemed to just walk through her part.

Uncageg-
In the last interview I posted, Stephanie compared playing Elphaba to running a marathon because from the moment she gets onstage she is on the go and passionately fighting for something. She is definitely NOT a passive character or a part that someone could just "walk through" I'm so confused by your choice of words, maybe I just don't get what you mean by them. You don't need to defend yourself as you have every right to feel however you want about a performance...it's just that it's the EXACT opposite of what I saw so maybe you can clarify? Also, didn't you see the show more than once? Was she the same to you each time?

Lawson Taite (the DMN critic) is usually a moron, but its good to see he praised Stephanie.

Aw, that's so great that the tour is starting out with such good reviews in Dallas! And go Stephanie, you show them how Elphaba's done! re: Great Wicked review from The Dallas Morning News

Priest-I too was pleased to see a good review from lawson Taitte. He is typically rather harsh (I have a theory that he picks 5 shows a year to give good reviews to), so it was a nice change.
