Are we all just sitting around allowing ASP to cast anyone who is not Audra?

Where did you get Audra from? She's never been connected to this project and she should remain disconnected from it if the producers want to make any money at the box office.

Melissa McCarthy is and always has been attached to this. Saoirse Ronan would make a great Gypsy.

Oh what wouldn't I give to someone of Viola Davis' caliber be in this role. Audra could do the vocals. It can be fabulous.

Amy Sherman-Palladino sounds like the perfect fit to bring Gypsy back to screen, but I just don't see this ever officially entering production. Bigger names in Hollywood have tried and failed to get this off the ground. 

Saoirse Ronan is a great idea for Gypsy, though. I'd watch her read a phone book.

Love both of them, but this sounds like a goddamn mess. Nobody could buy that Viola Davis would ever sound close to being a lyric soprano, even with the best of mixing technology.

I bemoan the idea of Melissa McCarthy. I’m kind of over her. She does great comedy and drama, but musicals don’t sound up her alley.

I like the idea of:

- Cate Blanchett, Amy Adams, Olivia Colman, or even Nicole Kidman or Michelle Pfeiffer if they are aiming older.

Paired with:

- Emma Stone, Margot Robbie or Saorise Ronan

and 

- Jake Gyllenhaal, Arnie Hammer, or Bradley Cooper as Herbie

I think Tony Shalhoub could be a great Herbie. It helps that he’s already connected to the Palladinos.

It does, but he’s also 65. He is well past Herbie’s age. Getting closer to playing the father.

Yes, because getting a great lyric soprano is so important when casting roles originated by Ethel Merman.

Someone mentioned Olivia Colman and she would be my first choice in terms of acting, but I think she'd really struggle with the singing, unfortunately.

Also, it sounds like a lot of people here have never seen Gypsy.....

and successfully played by Angela Lansbury, and Tyne Daly, and Patti Lupone etc etc.

I like the idea of Amy Adams, who has demonstrated incredible versatility and talent; and someone like Saorise Ronan would be totally believable as her daughter. Were they cast, Gyllenhaal or Cooper sound like great ideas, although James Corden maybe be better if they decide to play Herbie as a more average person. Well done, Quizking101.

The thoughts of her "Rose's Turn" she did in a concert I attended a couple years ago still gives him chills. She has ASP connection with Bunheads & Gilmore Girls Revival too.

I really wanted Amy to direct A Chorus Line movie, starring Sutton as Cassie.
