Hey, Since Harvey and Dick latessa will be reprising their roles in Las Vegas soon- they might be using that as a "refresher" for them to be in the film! (They put John Pinette back in the tour cast before moving him to broadway)
Let's Hope!
I would love Lacey Chabert or Anneliese Van Der Pol to be Penny.
Queen Latifa would just be WRONG for Motormouth. Patti Labelle would make much more sense for.
Here's the problem... Queen Latifah is too young. She's 35 in real life, but looks and plays late 20s to early 30s on the screen. Yet, Mabel is supposed to be the mother of Seaweed and Little Inez? Then everyone seems to jump to either Patti LaBelle or Aretha... and they're too old! Isn't there someone that's age-appropriate to play this part?
(Jennifer Holliday, anyone?)
Hmmm.....
I think I'll keep my mouth shut on this one.
The director has not made one good movie in his entire career. This is gonna SAWWWWWK!
Eww, I am all for Ms. Latifah was Motor Mouth but ARETHA FRANKLIN?! Did you not hear her at the Tony Awards, ruination of Somewhere! She would be a terrible choice. John Travolta would be a terrible choice too, Edna is suppose to look like a "Divne" type or Harvey Firestein or Bruce Valange. I think the original Tracy Melissa (las name) would be brilliant, she's done films before. Let's not ruin what was already great!
Ms. Latifah does not have the vocal ability to sing that role. I would think that would be pretty obvious. Outside of her age, it's her voice, or lack thereof, that would be the problem for me.

"no. not my beloved new line.
the wonderful company who produced the lord of the rings
has turned to..
hairspray!? WHY WHY!?
this is a time where we should be convincing the general population that broadway isn't cutesy, corny crap."
This "wonderful" company is also responsible for numerous "Friday the 13th" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street" sequels. And I still don't understand how 3 four hour long movies STILL managed to expunge vast matrial from a book (and technically it's only one) that isn't quite 1000 pages, yet a 2 hour Harry Potter movie manages to get most (but not all) out of its 400 page book.
As for casting, Alyson Hannigan cannot sing, and is afraid of singing (at least in public). She had maybe two singing lines in the musical episode of Buffy, and that was it. And Edna technically isn't a drag role. It's a female role played by a man. Travolta will totally turn it campy (moreso than it already is).
Harvery CAN'T do the movie. It is going to begin filming early next year, and as another poster mentioned, he is opening the Vegas production of "Hairspray" in February for a 12 week run. That means he wouldn't be available until at least April, and I expect the movie will be well underway filming by then.
And I don't think they meant Queen Latifah nessescarily has Motormouth in the bag. Actually, the way they phrased it, to me at least, it just sounded like since she has worked with Adam Shankman before and since that is a role she could fall into categorization for, that could make her a likley choice.

Does Adam Shankman have any Broadway credits?
Then they should get Bruce Valanche to do it then! Or Michael McKean, not extremely good looking Travolta!
Michael McKean is also well known with his slew of satires(A Might Wind, Best in Show)I can see him getting casted but seriously not John
Another scary thing about Shankman is that he's worked with Hilary Duff twice and you know what that means...
Mr. Travolta is extremely versatile. Just because you haven't seen him in a dress before doesnt mean he is incapable of doing the role.
Does anyone remember when Travolta imitated Streisand in full drag on SNL (Coffee Talk)? It was hysterical! He had all the manerisms down.
He can definitely pull this off, and I have no doubt that he would be fearless in his approach to the role.
Oh, did I mention that he is also a movie star?
Oh yeah, I forgot about that! He was really funny! (He also has similar facial structure to Barbara...kinda creepy)
Hilary Duff as Tracy.........no.
Patti LaBelle has one hell of a voice, still. She can still do a lot more with her voice than Aretha.
BUT, Those who saw her as Mama Morton in CHICAGO, said her acting left a lot to be desired, they said her vocals were amazing ofcoruse - but it felt like she was just playing herself. That's what some said.
I think Queen Latifah is too young for this role but I don't think it's a matter of her vocal abilities, I think she's an amazing performer and a great actress.
The whole Travolta issue makes me mad just because I believe Edna is Harvey Fierstein and if the role is going to be immortalized in the movie musical, then Fierstein's take on the role is the one that should be viewed by future generations.
Not sure what to think about this.

...and you can't stop the beat!
I apologize, I meant the musical Edna, I know the original Edna belongs to Divine indeed.
