I said this would close on the broadway board about a month ago and got called an idiot.

re: HAIRSPRAY to close on Broadway January 18th

Like i said i saw it months ago, its grosses were declining badly (last time it was doing big business was when the film came out), it was only a matter a time. It's had a great run though so shouldn't be sad

Thats the 3 campest shows on Broadway gone, Legally Blonde, Xanadu and Hairspray

I think 9 to 5 will fill that gap well, hopefully

It's only surprising in that Hairspray's been running long enough to become a fixture. The grosses have been consistently down for the last two years (though they got a short term boost from the film) and it's not getting any support from the tours anymore. It's been a great run for the show, and it'll live on in London as well as regional and amateur. I can imagine that every company in the US who can afford will be putting this one on as fast as possible.

re: HAIRSPRAY to close on Broadway January 18th

Why is this happening? Broadway finally gets a few decent new musicals, with original scores and they all close! ARG! Hairspray's such a good show too, I just hope the London production still continues to run, would be truly annoyed if we lost the production (no doubt it'd be placed by a god awful revival, cast via TV series if it did so...)

I think it had a great run but as I said I just hope the same doesn't happen for the London production anytime soon.

WishingOnlyWounds2 how do you know they butchered the West Side Story score, no one has heard it yet, all they are doing is giving it a Spanish flavor in parts

re: HAIRSPRAY to close on Broadway January 18th

There's a hell of a lot of anti 'West Side Story' going on over on the Broadway board- seems like they just don't want something new and fresh! Ah well at least the production in the UK is fresh and getting the best of reviews around the country.
Don't forget that its back in London next Aug /Sep followed hopefully by a full West End season

Hmmm... well, they did Latin-ify the 'Evita' revival, and that was by no means a massive success story.

But then, it wasn't the music's fault that the revival wasn't that brilliant, and I really like the new arrangements.

I guess we'll know how good the Broadway WSS revival is when we actually *see* it. ^_^

re: HAIRSPRAY to close on Broadway January 18th

Spider Man hasn't been confirmed, but is rumoured for next season and Godspell was canceled. Currently slated for Broadway this season are:

[title of show] (closing 12 Oct)
A Tale of Two Cities (currently running)
13 (opened last night)
Billy Elliot
Irving Berlin's White Christmas (limited engagement)
Pal Joey
Shrek
Vanities
West Side Story
9 to 5
Dancin'
Guys and Dolls
Hair

A revival of Brigadoon was postponed and pushed back possibly to next season. I'm curious about this revival of West Side Story as the 1980 revival with Debbie Allen was a flop.

re: HAIRSPRAY to close on Broadway January 18th

I have checked the Grosses for Hairspray and it hit 68%, I do not think the closure rumour would of had a chance to affect grosses, a lot of shows would be happy with attendances of 68%, I guess this has big production costs!
