Truthfully, he could have been much more harsh.
Isherwood's word is in...
Isn't it supposed to be "Holla", "HollER"?

No, it is Holler.

Sounds like Wayne Cilento still has that street cred.

Im actually delightedly surprised to see Isherwood not destroy it! I have not seen the show yet but there seems to not be much support for it and having the NYT speak very simply about what the piece IS rather than s**t on it makes me happy. I actually cant wait to get to see it (when I can afford to) and I think referencing it to WSS will be good for pulling quotes
I wouldn't wait too long to get tickets, unless the box office starts improving very quickly...

"Captures the seething intensity of Shakur’s songs."
-NYTimes
The best pull quote in there for them. Even though it's said about Saul Williams' performance, I'm sure they'll use it to describe the musical as a whole anyway.
Thanks Andrews, I love your reviews, you guys are the cutest!
Mixed to positive (ish) for the Associated Press
"The high-energy, deeply felt but ultimately overwrought production opened Thursday in a blaze of N-words at the Palace Theatre, proving both that rap deserves its moment to shine on a Broadway stage and that some 20 Shakur songs can somehow survive the transformation -- barely...Unlike other jukebox musicals, the songs in "Holler If Ya Hear Me" are rarely ever delivered in the style of the original artist. Instead, the show's creators test their elasticity by turning them into duets or group songs -- and one even gets a folky acoustic guitar treatment. The danger is that the urgent, free verse style of Shakur's very personal songs gets diffused, lightened and flattened...Either way, rap is firmly on Broadway, and that's something to celebrate."

Yet another bad review courtesy of Theatermania: www.theatermania.com/new-york-city-theater/reviews/06-2014/holler-if-ya-hear-me-review_68942.html.
I'm sure they'll post a closing notice tomorrow. No way will this mess make it past Sunday the 22nd.
Sounds like reviews for a Wildhorn show .
Why was their preview period so short? There seems to be something kind of iffy about this whole production.
A Max Bialystock production?

Comments about Holler on this board, and even in this thread, have tended to mock the show while most reviews have treated it somewhat respectfully. I'm more with the reviewers. I felt the show was a good first stab at the material and am dumbfounded at the stupidity of the producer's decision not to go out of town first. With no audience interest to support a long preview period an alliance with a regional theater like the Alliance would have made this, I believe, into a show that would have lasted at least until the new year. Now it'll be lucky to get to next week.

"The multi-character plot that replaces the expected bio-drama..."
Expected by whom? Don't you do your homework? From the moment this show was announced they have emphasized that it was not biographical. As a self-proclaimed reviewer, how could you have missed that?
It really is too bad they didn't give it an out of town or at least an extended preview period. It sounds like it could have been a pretty decent show if they gave it time to stew a little bit. Sounds pretty underdone unfortunately.

Already hearing this will close June 29th. whomp whomp what a waste
Honestly, I doubt even rave reviews could've saved this. There was simply no interest, and bad word of mouth spread exceedingly quickly.
"Wayne;s great...Leon over rated-got TONY because of Rudin's casting"
Leon got a Tony because John Tiffany's "Glass Menagerie" was closed already!
Where did you hear about the closing date?
Overall I thought the reviews were too kind.
Please leave Loretta Lynn out of any Tupac Shakur musical discussion!
It seems so clear that this show deserved more development than it got. There were some ill-advised decision makers responsible here. A pre-NY run should have happened. I made snap judgments when the creative team was first announced, which may or may not have been true. Wayne Cilento seemed an odd choice as choreographer, but maybe I don't know about his love and passion for Tupac and rap and the world of the book created for Shakur's lyrics. I'd want to pack the creative team with those who knew and were excited to bring this world to life with authenticity and integrity. Haven't seen it, so don't know that didn't happen - but, I wonder...
After reading the review in The Times, it seems like there's a show there, just not in this incarnation.
