Do you think that this should've been given a chance on Broadway? Or should it just stay in community theatres? I think with extravagant sets, and if you take out some of the adult themes, it could have a nice life on Broadway as a family musical.

Posted: 6/27/05 at 1:59pmIt won the Olivier Award in London for Best New Musical beating out The Lion King. A friend of mine saw the West End production and adored it.

Posted: 6/27/05 at 2:04pmOur community theater did it and the show (minus the huge cast) turned out really cute! The show is adorable and so is the music! I played the character of UGLY, and the audience just fell in love with the characters and songs, and costumes! It is such a fun story if done right! I think it would have a realllly good chance! :)

I really truly enjoy this show. I did the Jr. Version of it last year, where I co-directed as well as chroeographed the show. I think this is a great musical, and that it would be a joy to see on Broadway....

Posted: 6/27/05 at 2:15pmIts such a dear, sweet show. However, I don't think the score would sit wll with a broadway audience. I think the show works in community theatre but it would not be comercially feasible. Its essentially a quality holiday kids show.

Posted: 6/27/05 at 2:23pmHONK is a lovely show with a quiet message. The music is good and the characters are really well written. It is a much better show that THE LION KING, in my opinion. I have a very good friend who runs the Skylight Opera Theatre in Milwaukee, and last season they did it and it was a huge hit! Broadway may be too jaded for something this gentle, and they would probably over produce it to where the message gets buried in sets and special effects. Trust the material. It is excellent!

Posted: 6/27/05 at 3:13pmI played UGLY too! I really hated the show at first, but I became attached to it, playing a lead and everything. I don't think it's for Broadway though.

Posted: 6/27/05 at 3:24pmi played maureen, and at first i hated the whole 'boc-a-der-' thing...haha no one else will understand that...but the audience- both young and old- LOVED the show

Posted: 6/27/05 at 3:57pmi just saw a really great high school production of this show in the spring and I loved it...the costumes were especially amazing...and i really enjoyed the music...not sure how well it would do on Broadway, but I hope more community theaters take the opportunity to do the show...

re: HONK!#14
Posted: 6/27/05 at 5:20pmI was in Honk! my junior year. It was probably the most fun I've had doing a show. The music is great and everyone who saw it absolutely loved it. Not sure it would do well on broadway. But Raul as the cat is GENIUS. I'd love to see it.

Posted: 6/27/05 at 5:36pmI played The Cat in HONK! last year and had a blast playing the part! Hands down it is the best part in the show but then again, I am biased. I personally don't see it as a Broadway show however, I do think it could do well as a tour. The thing to remember about the show is that it really is geared a bit more towards adults than one might suspect. I have a hard time envisioning high schools and community theatres doing the show well (no offense) due to the elaborate sets, costumes and special effects the show requires. If the show did ever come to Broadway, I would hope that Barrett Foa would reprise his role of Ugly.

Posted: 12/12/05 at 9:42pmcan you believe that I saw a bumper sticker that said "Honk if you love Jesus" and I did, and they gave me the Finger!!??
re: HONK!#22
Posted: 12/12/05 at 9:42pmWell......It's a very cute show. I played Ugly in it over the summer. It was a theatre camp thing, so we did the junior version. It was only like, 20 random kids, so it sucked. I like the music a lot though. Raul as the cat would be amazing. I'm not sure how well it would do on Broadway...It's almost TOO family.

Posted: 12/12/05 at 9:46pmI have a bumper sticker on my wall, yes my wall since I don't have a car- I'm 15, and it says "Honk if you love musicals!" with little cartoon pictures of Ugly, Ida, and Ugly's siblings.
