No problem Phantom2.
**pulls out card to play Go Fish**
Mr Shaiman and Mr Wittman both manage to capture perfectly the feel of 1960s pop music and the John Waters-ian sense of humor in their score for Hairspray. I think that if someone had attempted to score the show in another style, it simple would NOT fly.
I am still a bit miffed at the comments about the song "Cooties". What does one expect. I think that the song is perfect asis. It is NOT a book number in the slightest.. it is an actual song that a stucky up, bratty, dim as can be blonde-bitch-in-training 16 year old sings in a competition.. therefor, it works.
Besides, scores do not have to be arias and light opera ala Les Miserables in order to be good. Hairspray does not drag. The songs move the plot, they fit perfectly in style with the book, they are catchy and memorable... the show has a WONDERFUL score.
Kiss up!

It is true though......
So have I missed something? Is Marc running around the boards here? He did have a hysterical New Years resolution on BWay.com >
Resolution for 2004: "My New Year's resolution is to stop reading theater chat boards...hang on, just a sec...look at what BroadwayGuy2 said to Phantom 2!...oh, where was I...oh yes, no more message boards...gee, that Broadway Bulldog and BestOfBroadway sure seem...whoops, sorry, I was saying...MammaMiaSammy, Amneris, I can't keep 'em all straight...THAT'S IT, NO MORE...FindingNamo, save me!!!!!!"
If he can read this, I was the drunk guy that ran into you and Scott like 5 times at Broadway Bares, you guys made my night!

Okay, so I just actually read through all of the previous posts, and Mrs. B should get a medal for her posts, as well as the runner-ups of Namo, BWayGuy (even though he might want to do some proofing of his text sometimes...) and Phantom2. Why is it when I think of BestOfBroadway all I can picture is fat and backhair? If anything, I feel sorry for him, and I hope he can find the love in his life that he needs to make him a happy person without so much hate. Also, in reference to both the "artists" work. Hairspray is a wonderful show, and I am sure it has changed many peoples attitudes towards being gay, even though there isn't a gay character. I know this, because my life was changed from a Broadway show, called Kiss of the Spider Woman. Happy New Year to all, and may the drive to BWayguys house be quick!

C.) For some of you I hope the drive is quick... For others, PLEASE get lost on the way.. you know who you are.....
D.) I agree with Copeman

I died laughing when I saw that link. Then I rushed over here to make sure no one had posted about it, so I could be the first, and I was wrong.

the ny times article was their usual hatchet job. every few years they roll out another "broadway is dead" article (sondheim anyone?) and think they are the most brillant journalists.
seeing how many mistakes they made in the misquoting Mr. Shaiman, is anyone really suprised? misquotes seem to be a staple at the ny times.
I am cancelling my subscription! No wait, I like to read the Weddings section.

Uh, there are no comics in the NYTimes.
Sigh.

side note to Namo :: hence my "LOL".
Sheesh.
I love Shaiman-Wittman & HAIRSPRAY. I don't get the bashing going on here. And "Cooties" is perfect because it's just so STOOPID in exactly the way "Monster Mash" and other 1960s novelty songs are. I look forward to future scores from them.
But some things really deserve to be, not bashed, but roundly bitch-slapped. Fred Ebb, for one: "Nobody has any right to intrude his private life on a mass audience," [Ebb] grumbles. "It is intrusive. "
As opposed to straight celebrity couples who do this EVERY F***KING DAY? Aren't they "intruding private lives on a mass audience?"
WHAT an asshole.
