The Hair Set Design is a brick wall and
a melange of fabulous rugs on the floor.
This show, while getting the feel, theme, music of Hair right, is sadly lacking in production values
and exciting sets.
The original has hydraulic lifts, puppets for the cops, Nixon LBJ and the Supremes
in one dress. Look up old pictures of the original and you will see what I mean.
what is masquerading as a Broadway Musical is actually a very good Off Broadway Style production.

I don't seem to remember the poster ASKING about the original's productions set at all.
And while I don't think the current set design is particularly inspired...I DO feel as though they wanted the entire focus to be all about the characters and the message. They chose for the set to be less than impressive.
You can't swing a cat around here without hitting the nasty police.

Sorry for 125 per ticket, I expect more than a brick wall.
And duck, cause here comes the cat right at you.

^ I pay to see the performance....not the scenery.
I personally think that the design is really pretty especially in person.

You might not go to the theatre for the scenery
but at $125 per ticket, it should be there.
Otherwise, it the producers were really trying to move you with a theatre experience,
they might charge less.
But it's a business. And boy did they SAVEMONEY on the sets.

While I don't LOVE the design....what are a bunch of hippie squatters suppose to have in an EMPTY THEATER? I didn't think ANYTHING was missing from the parks production, either. I think I would have been more annoyed HAD their been a fancy, elaborate set -- it wouldn't have belonged.
At at 125 bucks a seat (which is not necessary, I seem to find enough discount codes to take care of that) I expect a fabulous production: which includes a set that fits the NEEDS.
Little Mermaid's set is the most elaborate and UNNECESSARY thing I'd ever seen, I found it actaully took away from the show -- just because they CAN, doesn't mean they should.

Precisely...because the show works. Not because of or in spite of the set.
My MAIN point however: is that the OP simply wanted pix...why did goldenboy find the need to be negative about it. No one asked for opinions or comparisons.

Posted: 5/26/09 at 7:53amHair doesn't need an elaborate set design. Every show is different. When it comes to something like maybe Wizard of Oz, a magnificent set is prominent usually. But a concept musical ... like Hair ... I think the current set is great!

Personally I feel you want a show where the sets are all important and the show and performances are mediocre, there are plenty of those. I'd rather pay $125 and have stellar performances and leave feeling entertained rather then marveling at amusement park style stages.
But then there are those who are distracted by flash and glitter.

The set for Hair is brilliant! It doesn't draw attention to itself and yet fits the tone and timbre of the show. The conceit is that the Tribe took over a theatre. It looks like that is what happened.
The same brilliant design concept was used in the Delacorte, where the stage looked as though it was a continuation of the park itself, right down to worn down spots in the grass.

Posted: 5/26/09 at 7:32pmI didn't come away with the idea the Tribe took over a theater. I thought it was a perfect sort of canvas, however. I felt almost overcome with joy seeing a show where the performers and the band did all the work of telling the story and singing those songs gloriously and I wasn't expected to applaud a set.
