Music Theatre of Wichita's "Hairspray," with Blake Hammond.
Based on photos, the best looking regional production of "Hairspray" I've seen (thus far):
It's a shame they only played 5 performances.

Posted: 11/22/07 at 7:03pmI think it's a different look from the the original production. I mean it still has to be period appropriate, but I think it's not just like the bway production.

I certainly hope they included "Sets based on the original designs by David Rockwell" in the program. Those sets are a tad TOO close to the original to not give any sort of credit.

Posted: 11/22/07 at 9:23pmWell, they must have blown their whole budget on the sets and costumes because some of those wigs are horrendous. Velma's is horrible, and Tracy's is WAY too small. Also, that Tracy is just a little frightening. Also, that poster is pretty bad. She looks horrified or scared, not surprised.

i agree, too much of the scenic design is similar to david rockwell's designs for the original production. it looks beautiful, and it is certainly different, but a LOT of elements are obviously based on rockwell's pieces and concepts and designs (look at tracey's jail cell unit, the steps and arches in the ycstb end scene, the turnblad house unit with a half arch... TOO SIMILAR)
FURTHERMORE - a lot of aspects of the STAGING look dangerously similar to the original staging. look especially at Run and tell that with seaweed on the table at the end.
THAT SAID, this looks like a great production! did anyone here get to see it? how was the cast?

If you look at the theatre company's website there are other shows with dangerously similiar designs (like their CATS).
I'm also surprised that this production of Hairspray only ran for 5 days! The production budget (is obviously) extremely high. For a 5 day run???
I also agree that the staging looks copied. The ensemble spraying the hairspray cans during GMB, The Dynamites billboard, etc.
Remember when regional productions of Urinetown were sued by the Broadway creators earlier this year...hmmm
Something isn't right here!

Well they even used the original poster & logo design.
They MUST have had permission for all of this. Right??? :S

Posted: 11/23/07 at 8:28pmThe director of the show was Greg Graham, who was a member of the Original Broadway Cast, and he had permission to use the staging for this production, as well as the Little Theatre on the Square's production, which he also directed. I did see TLTOTS's production of "Hairspray" and there are a couple of similarities between the costumes and sets used in both productions. The only difference is that it's obvious that the Music Theatre of Wichita had A LOT more money to spend!
