Hairspray! Oh, oh, oh, it's Okay!

Posted: 11/30/04 at 6:20pmI missed the section of the guidelines that says Swings can't have opinions...what if Stephen Sondheim joined last week and wanted to express an opinion today? It wouldn't be valid because he's a Swing?

Posted: 11/30/04 at 6:22pmWell jmaclover, there's a lot of interest in this thread, isn't there. Again, I think I've been in line with my comments. They reflect my opinion, and I certainly stated the positive things about Hairspray as well, I just think its shortcomings outweigh it's good points! Also, there was confusion over my Wicked thread, so that's not the same thing.

I've seen two threads started by Loge- one asking "What's the big deal about Wicked?" and this one, which pretty much asks "What's the big deal about Hairspray?" If Loge had a longer posting history, maybe I wouldn't be worried that this is going to be a recurring pattern. *shrug*
I like Hairspray- it's a great example of well-crafted fluff. I'm not going to put it on my list of all-time immortal shows, but that doesn't make it worthless.

Um, my Wicked post was simply asking why that show seems to be the most popular on this board. This thread deals with Hairspray, because I've seen people shred Mamma Mia in other posts, yet praise Hairspray.
I also started a number of threads about The Woman in White, which were very positive, and I have contributed to a number of postive discussions. Besides, stating the negatives and POSITIVES about Hairspray does not make it negative.
And Plum, hon, if you're going to quote someone get it right. My Wicked thread is titled "What is it With Wicked?" not "What's the Deal About Wicked?"
I love how people can go on and on about how horrible Dracula, DOTV, Brooklyn, and All Shook Up are, but heaven forbid someone dislike Hairspray!

Loge,
I take it your from the West Coast since you saw "Hairspray" during its premiere run in Seattle. I happen to like it, and it would be interesting as to what you thought of it now that it's on Broadway (though not the same with all the replacements, though then again, the music still is).

Posted: 11/30/04 at 6:30pmI loved the movie too -- I saw it a couple of times when it came out and have owned a copy of the video since it was released. I had memorized it line-for-line years before there was a musical version. That said, the film and the musical are two entirely separate entities and both outstanding in their own rights, IMO.

Maybe you need to learn how to explain yourself better.
Let me try: You recently joined and now you are starting threads about Wicked and Hairspray - two very popular musicals.
Thank you Plum - I though I was going crazy.

Posted: 11/30/04 at 6:35pmWHAT WAS SO BAD about my Wicked thread? Ok, I just re-read it, and maybe I didn't express myself as well as I should(could) have. I do like Wicked. It's enjoyable. I am just surprised that it's as popular as it is...that's all. Now Hairspray, I do not like! Well, again, I'll occassionally listen to it when I want fun music, but it's not that great.

I don't feel like rereading this so, excuse me if you've said this, have you seen Hairpsray?
The music is supposed resemble the 60s, which it does.
But your entitled to your Opinion.
Do you like the music from Urinetown?

I have seen Hairspray! I agree, the music is fitting for the time period. I just don't think it's original, in the least! It sounds like 50 other shows from the 60's. You can be original and adhere to the time period. Hairspray adheres, but is not original.
I am not fimilar enough with Urinetown to comment on it's merits.
Now, I'll agree that my inital Wicked post may have been a triffle severe, but I don't think my original Hairspray post was.

Posted: 11/30/04 at 6:46pmLoge: dont say something if you cant take the heat for it. it seems like whenever you give an opinion but are threatened by something someone else says you get taken back.

What? I'm just defending my opinion and my right to have an opinion about Hairspray. Re: Wicked, I am saying that I was a bit harsh in my initial post and I can see why people reacted the way the did to that thread. What's wrong with saying I could have approached something differently?
As far as Hairspray goes, I stand by every word I said, and I don't think I'm wrong in saying that it is more acceptable on this board to bash shows like All Shook Up and Dracula than it is to say negative things about Hairspray and Wicked! How can you even tell me it isn't?

I don't think it's right to bash any shows - only saying you dislike a show - that's fine.
I'm waiting for some shows that Hairpsray resembles, LOGE....

Well, I don't think I outright bashed Hairspray, because I did mention positives about it as well.
I'll have to research it more. I don't typically like shows that are from that period, but have lived with someone who did. Granted the score is not a copy cat score, it definitely sounds like other shows I've heard from that period. Of course, the music was specifically written for Hairspray. I just am saying I don't think it's groudbreaking music - that's all.

Posted: 11/30/04 at 7:04pmI really agree with Loge. Hairspray is not a very good show, IMO, and definately did not deserve all the awards (even the Grammy). I probably wouldn't hate it so much if it wasn't so overrated.

Posted: 11/30/04 at 7:14pmI saw Hairspray last November. I did the student rush with a group of friends. It was cute and fun and loved the sets and staging, but I didn't leave the theatre wanted to go back and see it right away. However, I will say that I had about 3 hours sleep and was running around the city all morning then had to stand through the show. I do not know if my opinion would be different if I had not been thinking how much my feet hurt.

Posted: 11/30/04 at 7:25pmGeez...I guess it's not okay to express one's opinion if it isn't in line with the majority on here! You people sure don't react this way when anyone says anything negative about Dracula! Why is that?
#46re: Hairspray! It's Not That Good!
Posted: 11/30/04 at 7:36pmAlthough I disagree with Loge's opinion, why does one's opinion turn into a 2 page arguement? If you don't like something you read, move on. I seriously don't think Loge's opinion is going to affect Hairspray's future.

Posted: 11/30/04 at 7:39pmi agree millie, however, Loge has expressed numerous opinions today, all being negative. Id like to hear something positive from them first.

Posted: 11/30/04 at 7:40pmYes it is. I'm moving to New York and I am going to spend every waking hour outside the theater holding a sign that says "Hairspray Sucks: Don't Waste Your Money". I'm sure that's really going to affect the show's success. Sarcasm off.
