I have to partially agree with the original poster.

While I don't hate HAIRSPRAY, I don't see what's so good about it. Marissa was adorable and Harvey was funny, but that's about it.

It's a great family show. It's fun and makes you happy. While all shows might not be everyones taste, this show makes people want to come back again.

I couldn't disagree more with the original poster. I usually think the shows that win best musical do not deserve all the attention. I thought THE PRODUCERS and MILLIE were absolutely awful, so I expected to hate HAIRSPRAY. In my opinion, HAIRSPRAY is so well written in every aspect that it deserved every single award it won. It's absolutely not the greatest show - but it's not your typical fluff. It's solid, well written fluff with an amazing message and a fun score. I saw it in previews when it first opened, maybe it was just stronger back then. I'm assuming you just recently saw it, and that's why you posted it now. You claim "the music wants to make you shake your hips." Then you go on to say that so does Britney Spears, and she's "no good either." I'm glad you're the expert. If Britney Spears' music makes you shake your hips, as you put it, don't you think it's quite possible that you enjoy it more than you'd like to admit? I adore her music and no, HAIRSPRAY isn't one of the best musical scores. Take another look at the nomineed that year, and you'll see why HAIRSPRAY cleaned up. The only other musical out that year that had a better score was DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES, and it closed too earliy and was deemed ineligible.

First off, were you awake and watching the show??? But then again there are people who hate the show Wicked which scares me also. Anyways, if you had been paying attention, the only time Tracy even says "oh, oh, oh" 3 times at once is Godd Morning Baltimore. She doesn't say oh oh oh that much!! It's a wonderful show. The music is much better than anything Britney Spears could belt out and the music is held nicely within a great plot. Hairspray is practically screaming "Don't think you're not cool just because the people on magazines are nearly throwing up themselves to death!" It's a good show! The music is wonderful and frankly, I wonder if you really were watching the show. The staging and the lines are extremely creative!

The Grammy wasn't for BEST SCORE. It was for best cast recording - overall sound, quality, packaging. Not the actual score.

1. It brushes over the whole racial issue.

2. The lyrics, while not bad, are not great.

3. Almost all the songs have happy-go-lucky lyrics, yet the show deals with serious issues?

4. "Good Morning Baltimore", "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now", "It Takes Two", "Welcome to the 60's", and "Good Morning Baltimore (reprise)" feature excessive and annoying "oh, oh, oh's" and "yeah, yeah, yeah's" instead of lyrics.

5. "Miss Baltimore Crabs" (which I don't believe was in the show in Seattle) is just stupid. It's obvious it's only purpose is to give Velma more to do.

6. The movie is WAY better.

well, I LOVED it!!

I can't stop going back to see it over and over!!

Marc Shaiman can sometimes be annoying and egotistical and post to many pictures of his dogs.


But damn it all he is a great guy. Who is always a joy to have when not defending his honor in which case he can be as catty as any of my fellow theatre fags.

He is also a damn good composer. Hairspray is the kind of musical you just want to hug and then dance with.

Which surprises me Loge, after the way you post I'd say your issue was not getting hugged enough as a child.
