Hmm, maybe I'll audition as an extra. There were Asians in 1960s Baltimore, weren't there?
Break a leg, sweetie.
I hope they cast the original cast.
I also loved Kathy Brier as Tracy. Her voice (In Divas, was really incredible. She has a gorgeous voice and would be perfect as Tracy, she is also a soap star)

I think Devine is rolling over in his (her) grave. They need Harvey, Harvey deserves this. Can you tell Im a Harvey fan? But Billy Crystal and Queen Latifah would be wonderful.
Dang. I would have really liked Kerry Butler to be Penny again. . And also, regarding a post earlier about Glen Close, I think that she would make a good Velma. Or Bette.

It seems like people are assuming that harvey wasn't offered the role. It's possible they offered him and he didn't want to do it on film, and opted for Vegas instead.

folks, I think you overestimate the amount of involvement that the show's originators are willing to have with this film. Whitman and Shaiman stayed on, but it seems like all of the other producers and designers are keeping a safe distance. The probability of this movie bearing ANY resemblance to the FABULOUS musical is slim. But just give it a chance! It may be fabulous in another way.
Without Harvey as Edna the film is nothing.
When I think about Hairspray the only thing I think about is Edna. Harvey is Edna and the only Edna that came close to his perfect performance was Vilanch.
Travolta is a fine performer, and I am sure he has what it takes but some of us want the man that started the magic.
It brings a tear to my eye.
Harvey is DIVINE.

How about Martin Short? He looks good in a fat suite. Haha.
I Think that Meryl Streep would be Devine as Velma, almost a through back in ways to her role on She Devil. I also think that Glenn Close would be great too.
If they are having these Open calls for Tracy, what's so wrong with MJW? BTW, I saw her and Pam Anderson on Tyra the other day and it was cute. MJW talked about winning the Tony and really "showed" up Pam who came off looking kinda stupid.
Does anyone think that Amy Adams would make a good Penny? She even as a bit of that Kerry Butler look. I don't know how she sings but sometimes that's not an issue in movies, epecially for "non-leads".
Yes, I can see Amy Adams as Penny, but wish they would offer Tracy Miller the role and Chester Gregory as Seaweed. For me, those two ARE Penny and Seaweed!
And I second Corine's vote for Harvey--LOVE him!
Yeah, I third the Harvey vote. If names are important, I think that his is big enough.
Thanks for agreeing about Amy!
However, If John Travolta gets it, we can look forward to seeing some nice shows on Oprah!
LOL--true.
I do think if they DO get enough "names", they should really consider casting the Penny and Seaweed roles with Tracy and Chester. Probably won't happen, but would love to see it! Still want to see Donnie Osmond as Corny and Mandy Moore as Amber!
