A lot of people on this board have been crediting both of these shows for paving the way and opening doors for future musicals. I was wondering what you guys think people in the future will be saying about these shows, and if you think one will be more important or leave a more lasting impact.
Amazing Grace
Oh yes Tobias!
How could I forget that seminal piece of American theater?
Girls! Girls! You're both pretty!
Isn't that the new Sondheim show Brian?

Starlight Express. I'll never forget the immersive roller skate rink. Important. Very, very important.
Watch it, taz! I don't want to see any disparaging remarks about The Blonde in the Thunderbird around here.
I'd like to see you expose your suitcase of lies on a Broadway stage!
I meant no offense Whizzer.
Ms. Somers' suitcase of lies was a remarkable Broadway moment.

Guys, lets not forget School of Rock!
You're mocking your own thread..?
Guys, it's obviously Carrie. The original one from the 80s, not the revised version.
In all seriousness, can we just say that they're both important? There's no need to compare two radically different shows...

Eh. Its going to be mocked regardless. I thought there would be some serious discussion, but this is fine, too. Might as well join in the fun.

Since Hamilton will get best musical next year, I guess I'm wondering what will get best play? It's no fun knowing all the Tony winners so far in advance, lol
All musicals are equally important.
When Suzanne came out with an ACTUAL SUITCASE and carried it around with her it was clear this would be a level of brilliance rarely achieved in the theater.
Her mash up of Take Back Your Mink with a terrifying monologue about how her abusive father shredded her prom dress (which she stitched back together in time for the dance!) was another moment seldom rivaled.

This is what I believe as well. They are both significant pieces in terms of expanding the form. They do so in their own way however.
Comparing these two specific shows to each other seems limited to me. I think there is a larger discussion to be had as to their influence on musical theater in general though.
StageStar, thanks for getting my humor and taking it in the spirit which it was meant.
You're a sweetheart. ![]()
Baloney!
Everyone knows CATS is more important than any other musical before or since!
CATS: Now and Forever!
The one I like more.

Completely agree! I was just suggesting those two since they are the two currenrently running that people seems to be talking about.
And of course! No need to get all up and arms over a BWW message board post :)
