These tickets look so fake. Unfortunately, the occasional theatergoer may not even notice.

^ Exactly. I think people who buy tickets on Craigslist kind of deserve whatever they have coming to 'em. But in any event, people shouldn't be producing counterfeits in the freaking first place. Glad that they're starting to crack down on them.

She goes to a show once a month and those tickets "looked dead on" to her? Also the guy was selling her a ticket for $175 when they supposedly cost him at least $176.75? She must have thought he was the idiot.

The ones in the bottom photo, with the Nederlander logo on the right, look pretty damn authentic to me. In fact, when I compared them to the Hamilton tickets I have for a May performance (which I bought myself at the box office), the printing job on mine looks worse! (The numbers under the bar code on mine aren't legible.)
Plus, if you're standing on a street corner doing a transaction, your sleuthing skills probably aren't at their best.

While I'm happy the guy got caught, did anyone else roll their eyes when the woman in the article talked about how he "murdered her dream of seeing Hamilton" when the police (rightfully) said that there were maybe more important things to worry about? I get that it sucks to get scammed, and I would be disappointed as well, but take down the drama a little bit.

It's kind of surprising to me that they afforded her 10 officers for this. You'd figure a lot of similar complaints about this individual would have had to have been made for this kind of thing to happen.

That did seem over the top, for sure. :) On the other hand, if I someone stole $350 from me and I went to the police and they basically said "tough luck," I'm not sure exactly how I'd respond. (Not that we actually know that much about this interaction from the linked article.)

So the police should NOT try to solve thefts? Criminals should have free reign to steal $350 from people because there are other more serious crimes?

Did I say that the police shouldn't investigate theft? Of course they should have investigated and it's good they found the guy, but something this trivial doesn't get to take precedence over other more serious crimes.

THIS! You beat me to it. When I read this article yesterday I couldn't stop my eye-rolling. The line about "murdering my dream of seeing Hamilton" was absurd. And yeah while it's good that police helped her, did this really require a 10- officer sting operation? This was a small-time crook not a huge counterfeit operation.

I saw Hamilton six months ago. If I got tickets like those now I am not sure if it would leap out at me that they were particularly different. Especially with all the wish fulfillment that comes with wanting to buy something that is actually everything it says it is. (And then you find out you can't see through clothes with X-Ray Specs at all.)

I would never buy tickets on any site other than ticketmaster or telecharge but, to me, those tickets look real. I went to Something Rotten in December and purchased my [rush] ticket in person at the box office. it appears all shows using Ticketmaster now print like that - grey and red.

There was an interview with her on the noon news. I tuned out after she said she listened to the soundtrack the whole night before. That still bothers me.

Of course she was being overly dramatic there, but the police had already told her that essentially they didn't care and she was trying to get their attention so I think it's fair enough that she went a bit over the top there, no?! Wouldn't you when you've been robbed and the police tells you to go away?
10 officers seems a bit much, too. But from the information they were given it was probably hard to tell if this was just a small-scale petty criminal or a bit rink of organised crime, so better to be on the safe side. There might even be regulations?
But the whole exchanging tickets for cash situation already smells like scam to me, and I would NEVER do that, especially in NY. Worse, I'd be scared to be murdered, not just given fake tickets! I've bought secondary market tickets before (not for bway though, concerts on occasion and basketball recently & pretty much always around face value), but never via craigslist. I've only ever used stubhub, who is giving a guarantee your tickets are real. I've also recently learned how that works and makes me more confident in using those sites. (
